Nicolas Cage is starring in the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired movie Color Out of Space, and in the film’s new trailer, things get intense fast.
H.P. Lovecraft’s work is known for bending our perceptions of reality and what is and isn’t a threat, which is certainly true in his short story The Colour Out of Space. And it’s that short story that is the inspiration for Nicolas Cage’s latest movie, also called Color Out of Space.
The film released a trailer, and it doesn’t waste any time letting us into the outrageous story we’re about to encounter. Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson play a husband and wife who move their family out of the big city into the country.
However, though their new surroundings feel perfect and idyllic, things take a massive turn for the sinister when a meteor crashes on their property.
If you’re familiar with Lovecraft’s short story, one thing you’ll probably notice right away is how similar the trailer makes the movie seem to the source material.
Obviously some things have been updated and the story has been expanded to accommodate a full-length feature film, but Lovecraft’s story about a sinister meteor slowly causing the earth around it to transform and the family to experience a wide range of strange phenomena around them, doesn’t change much from page to screen.
In addition to staying true to the original tale, Color Out of Space has a great cast. The movie doesn’t just star Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson, but Madeleine Arthur (The Magicians), Tommy Chong (Zootopia), Julian Hilliard (The Haunting of Hill House), Q’orianka Kilcher (Yellowstone), Elliot Knight (Titans), and Brendan Meyer (The OA). The film is directed by Richard Stanley.
If you were at the Toronto Film Festival in September, chances are you’ve already checked out Nicolas Cage in his latest film adventure. However, Color Out of Space is set for wide release on January 24, 2020. Until then, be sure you read the original short story by Lovecraft to get ready for the film!
