Michael Fassbender could be teaming up with Taika Waititi for his next big screen role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender is currently in talks to star in Next Goal Wins.
Billed as a sports dramedy, Next Goal Wins is the next project coming down the pipeline for Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.
Waititi’s next film is based off of a British documentary by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, which debuted under the same name in 2014.
The film tells the story of American Samoa — an underdog national football team, who, along with their coach, set off to transform themselves from a losing team into FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Michael Fassbender, who was last seen on the big screen reprising his role as Magneto in Dark Phoenix, is nearing final talks to portray the team’s coach, Thomas Rongen.
There’s currently no word on who will portray the American Samoa team members, but THR reports that Waititi and Fox Searchlight have put out a casting call to find Fa’afafine actors to portray them.
In addition to his directorial duties, Waititi has also teamed up with Iain Morris to co-write the screenplay for Next Goal Wins. Others involved behind the camera include Jonathan Cavendish,
Garret Basch, Andy Serkis, plus original documentary filmmakers Brett and Jamison. They’ve all signed on to serve as producers on the project.
There’s currently no word on when we can expect Next Goal Wins, but both Michael Fassbender and Taika Waititi are keeping quite busy in the meantime.
Currently, Fassbender is in the process of filming the action crime comedy Kung Fury 2. Meanwhile, Waititi has got a full plate between Jojo Rabbit (October 18), Thor: Love and Thunder (2021), and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021).
