Joel Johnstone has been cast in Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom as a Romney campaign staffer, suggesting certain plot-lines for season 2 of the controversial HBO show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnstone will appear as the recurring character of Cameron on season 2 of The Newsroom. Cameron will be a staffer on the Mitt Romney election campaign. Johnstone has, until now, appeared primarily in short films. The Newsroom may prove to be a breakout role for the young actor.

This is not the first we have heard of the Romney campaign storyline for season 2, but it certainly implies a large focus on this thread in the second season. As we reported previously, Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer has already been cast as Hallie Shea, a reporter embedded with the Mitt Romney campaign.

Using our detective skills, we are assuming that a greater emphasis will be placed on covering Romney’s, rather than Obama’s campaign. Aaron Sorkin himself has confirmed that Adam Arkin will be returning as the Republican party representative he portrayed in the first season of The Newsroom. Additionally, Aaron Sorkin has confirmed the season 2 timeline, which certainly fits with the focus on the election.

‘The Newsroom’ season 2

In other season 2 casting news, showrunner Aaron Sorkin has also previously confirmed the return of season 1 guest star David Krumholtz, while Rosemarie DeWitt and Patton Oswalt have also been added in recurring roles. The first episode of season 2, the title of which is yet to be announced, will air on HBO in June 2013. The first spoilers for episode 2×01 and episode 2×02 were recently released.

The cast also recently hit Twitter to share their excitement at returning to film The Newsroom season 2.
