Vanity Fair has released a series of Star Wars: The Last Jedi pictures from their anniversary issue, giving us our first looks at Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro.
Following the cover reveals yesterday, Vanity Fair has posted its entire spread of cast photographs from The Last Jedi, taken by the legendary Annie Leibovitz.
See the stunning first-look images at newcomers Laura Dern (Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo) and Benicio del Toro (DJ):
Also included are images of the late Carrie Fisher with her daughter Billie Lourd and her on-screen brother Mark Hamill:
There are many more to check out, including this great action shot of Rey (Daisy Ridley):
In the cover story for the anniversary issue, director Rian Johnson gives a little glimpse into his approach to the movie, saying, “I started by writing the names of each of the characters, and thinking, ‘What’s the hardest thing they could be faced with?'”
Of Luke and Rey’s time on the island, which might reasonably be expected to parallel Luke and Yoda’s, Johnson teases, “There’s a training element to it, but it’s not exactly what you would expect.”
They also talk about Carrie Fisher’s role; the actress tragically passed away last December after filming her part in The Last Jedi — she’ll have “significantly more screen time” this time around, which is a bittersweet bit of news.
It becomes even more heartbreaking when Kathleen Kennedy implies that we would have had so much more to look forward to. “The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’” Kennedy remembers. “Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”
