‘New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe’ secret character brings back slot Toadette took over

Toadette and her Super Crown item were all the rage when it was first announced, but there was always some contention over the axing of the character that she took the place of. Now, you can bring that New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe secret character back into the fray.

Blue Toad was axed in favor of Toadette in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which is understandable, given how generic the little guy is. Blue Toad wasn’t really any different from the regular Toad, in either character design or the way they handled.

Toadette takes the Blue Toad’s place in the character select screen in the Switch port, making it appear as if the short Toadstool Kingdom denizen was no longer playable in deluxe title. However, you can easily unlock him as a New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe secret character by following these simple steps:

1. On the character select screen, highlight the Yellow Toad
2. Press L or ZL, and the Yellow Toad will be switched out for the Blue Toad

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe made waves recently when it was discovered that Bowsette was confirmed as being officially not canon. It’s not as if we really expected her to be playable in the Switch game, but if there was ever any doubt that Nintendo was considering allowing other characters to transform into a Peach alt of themselves, those dreams have sadly died.

Nintendo saw amazing profit toward the end of 2018, with Pokémon GO having had its best year yet, and the Nintendo Switch achieving stellar sales, largely in thanks to blockbuster titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee!.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was a Nintendo Wii U port that released for the Nintendo Switch on January 11, 2019. It includes all of the content of New Super Luigi Bros. U, along with new content exclusive to the port.
