Hello, again, Hypable readers! I did a post like this last year and a spring one earlier, but with so many great new shows airing over the summer season, I couldn’t resist doing it again.
So, without further ado, here are five brand new shows fit for your Labor Day weekend binge.
5) ‘Outcast,’ Cinemax
Robert Kirkman (creator of The Walking Dead) is back to adapt another successful graphic novel series. Outcast follows experienced exorcist Reverend Anderson (Phillip Glenister) and Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit) while they navigate a town full of deception and demonic presences.
As Kyle’s mysterious past unravels, a hope to vanquish the evil emerges, but will it be enough to save a town that might not want to be saved? A gifted cast and terrifying visuals makes this series a must for fans of The Waking Dead. The first season of Outcast is available on Cinemax and you can watch the pilot for free now on YouTube!
4) ‘Dead of Summer,’ Freeform
Creators of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time are here to deliver “the other ’80s horror series” that you may not have heard of. I was a bit apprehensive at first since the season begins by asking more questions than it answers, but its penultimate and finale episodes were among the most satisfying episodes of TV I’ve seen this summer.
With Zelda Williams, Paulina Singer, Mark Indelicato, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Elizabeth Lail making fresh and memorable performances, the series redefines the horror mystery drama while breathing new life into the Summer Camp setting. Delving into political and social issues that are still relevant today, the series surpasses your basic horror tropes and replaces them with deep and relevant characters.
I can’t say much more without giving the mystery away, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the backstories while trying to guess who the killer is. Odds are, though, you’ll be wrong. ;)
Writing team Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis, and Ian B. Goldberg delivered a superb summer series you simply can’t miss. You can watch the pilot free on YouTube and finish your binge on Freeform or with the Freeform app!
3) ‘Preacher,’ AMC
One word to describe AMC’s newest series: badass. Brought to you from the insane minds of Superbad, Pineapple Express, and This Is the End, dynamic duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg team up with Breaking Bad alumnus Sam Catlin to bring forth a truly unique series.
Dominic Cooper stars as a preacher who becomes attached to a supernatural force known as “Genesis,” which grants him God’s ultimate power of command. With dynamite performances from Ruth Negga and Joseph Gilgun, the two aid the preacher as he navigates his new power on their journey to find God.
Even more unique about this already impressive series is that it begins as a prologue for the comic series it was based on, allowing the team more creative freedom and time to acquaint us with such explosive characters. You can watch the first four minutes on YouTube now and catch the entire first season on AMC.com!
2) ‘Stranger Things,’ Netflix
Chances are, this is a series you’ve probably already heard of, but if you’re reading this and still haven’t watched it, sign off now and start binging! This series is an absolute MUST. Bringing the always lovely Winona Ryder to our screens again and featuring an incredible breakout performance from Millie Bobby Brown, the series is a mixture of mystery, sci-fi and action with plenty of ’80s nostalgia to make you yearn for a time you may not have even been alive for.
After their friend goes missing shortly following a heated game of D&D, three boys and one powerful young girl will stop at nothing to find out the truth behind his disappearance…even if what they find kills them.
The series has been universally and quickly loved by all and you can watch the trailer on YouTube then binge the entire first season on Netflix!
1) ‘The Night Of,’ HBO
Based on the British mini-series Criminal Justice, The Night Of pairs Riz Ahmed with John Turturro, who deliver the most compelling performances of the season in this dark New Yorker series. After a night of partying, Nasir “Naz” Khan (Ahmed) wakes to find the girl he’d only just met brutally stabbed to death. In a panic, he rushes out of the house back to his father’s stolen taxi cab only to realize he’d forgotten the keys.
Now he must break back into the house with the bleeding corpse only to raise suspicion and further implement himself as the prime suspect. But did he do it?
John Turturro’s performance as the underdog, eczema-ridden lawyer John Stone is nothing short of exceptional. His efforts on Naz’s case parallel his stubborn skin irritations that only worsen as his stress reaches skyscraper levels. Can the lawyer navigate his way through circumstantial evidence to free the already prejudged Naz? Writer Richard Price (The Wire) returns to HBO with Steven Zallian in this gripping crime series illuminating racial issues poignant in today’s New York.
