Another wave of reports from once reputable websites claim that another Harry Potter movie with Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint is in the works. It’s not.
Rumors first surfaced last week around the same time that J.K. Rowling’s stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was preparing to announce updated branding. The fact that The Cursed Child was about to take on the same “Harry Potter” logo used for the movies did not help quell internet speculation.
The source of the movie rumors was WeGotT***Covered (censoring and not linking because they do not deserve the backlink), who has a reputation for straight up lying in an attempt to make their content go viral.
Unfortunately, sites including Yahoo! regurgitated the news, causing reports of a ninth Harry Potter movie to spin out of control.
While Warner Brothers would surely love to produce additional Harry Potter / Wizarding World movies, it looks like nothing will happen until after the Fantastic Beasts series wraps up. Their interest in a Cursed Child movie was reported by reputable sources in 2016, but at the time, the studio’s plan was to wait until J.K. Rowling finished Newt Scamander’s story.
With Fantastic Beasts 3 not due until 2021, and the remaining two Beasts movies possibly hitting theaters in 2023 and 2025, it seems unlikely that any other Wizarding World spinoff movies would happen any sooner than 2026.
If something else does head into production, it probably won’t be Cursed Child related. Remember, Rowling said in January 2017 that a Cursed Child movie will be happening right after Cursed Child On Ice.
If another movie with the original characters were to ever happen, I doubt that they’d be able to get all three of the original cast back. The Trio have spent a lot of time trying to move on from being exclusively labeled “the Harry Potter stars,” and no amount of money may convince them (and others!) to un-do their work.
In the meantime, the only major project that might have a shot in hell (that wouldn’t cannibalize Fantastic Beasts) would be a Harry Potter TV series of some sort, since that’s one medium currently void of Wizarding World content.
