For the first time ever, New Girl aired an episode without Zooey Deschanel featured as Jess, and we were pleasantly surprised at the result!
Right at the start we love how the episode opens up by the loft mates learning that Jess is going to be away on jury duty for several weeks. Winston immediately starts to worry about who will help him get through a crisis he’s having with his girlfriend KC, which seems to emulate the panic that some New Girl fans may be having at the thought of the series without Jess. Not to worry, Cece is here to take care of the guys while Jess is gone! Too bad none of them seem convinced that she can compare to having Jess around.
Cece’s first advice to Winston is to post a picture of himself with a hot girl online, since he’s worried about the photo she posted with a hot guy. It does get a reaction out of KC, but not the one he was looking for. When Winston ends up dumped, and begins to freak out even more that he needs Jess. Cece tries to assure him, “You don’t need Jess because I’m here and I’ve got this!”
While trying to give Winston a pep talk, Cece ends up just making Winston feel worse, until he ends up realizing that he wants to break the cycle of his relationships. He wants to be the one in control and make the girls cry. Even though she’s completely uncomfortable with it at first, Cece agrees to go see KC and tell her that Winston has died. When she realizes that KC was in fact cheating on Winston, she really rubs it in to make her feel awful.
Despite it being something completely opposite of what Jess would do, it ends up being just what Winston needs. Cece isn’t Jess, but she can still hold her own, keep the group together, and keep fans entertained. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing an episode where a large chunk of it focused on two of the usually smaller characters, Winston and Cece. We hope that when Megan Fox starts her run as a recurring character, it doesn’t overshadow the others.
Also keeping things interesting, Nick decided to turn the loft into an airbnb in order to pay for Schmidt’s bachelor party since he promised to take him to Tokyo. Even though Jess is gone, there isn’t a lack of characters around, with Fred Armisen appearing as Brandon and Stephen Rannazzisi as Todd. It would also be fun to see these two characters again!
