Netflix’s book-to-TV adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events will not continue beyond the series of books it’s based on.
Neil Patrick Harris made the revelation during a new interview this week. The actor, who plays Count Olaf, is already filming the third (and final!) season.
“We’re three seasons all in,” Harris told TV Guide. “We’ve intentionally been very truthful and factual and loyal to the books. We’ve added a few characters that aren’t in the books, we’ve added some songs that you probably couldn’t put into the books, but for the most part we’re sticking to the structure of what already worked.”
This is great news and a tad surprising, because networks including Netflix and HBO have made habits out of extending TV shows that shouldn’t be stretched: Thirteen Reasons Why and Big Little Lies are both in the process of going beyond their source material. Like Hollywood studios do with sequels, TV networks get tempted by this idea when they have a big hit on their hands.
Each season of A Series of Unfortunate Events has adapted a few of Lemony Snicket’s books at a time. Season 2 will cover The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital, and The Carnivorous Carnival.
That means season 3 will cover The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril and The End. And, as it stands now, season 3 will truly be “The End.”
Good!
A Series of Unfortunate Events returns March 30, 2018. Season 2 will consist of ten episodes, with each of Snicket’s books getting two episodes.
