Marvel and Netflix are once again teaming up for an original series, this time with The Punisher, and casting rumors are finally trickling in.
Jon Bernthal was so impressive as Frank Castle in Daredevil season 2, that no one was surprised he’d be getting a Punisher spinoff. But that doesn’t mean we were any less ecstatic about the news.
We’re not totally sure when we’ll be seeing The Punisher season 1 land on Netflix, but the latest rumors say it could be as early as next year, with others saying we may have to wait until 2018.
And speaking of rumors, we’re getting some new information regarding casting for the first season of the new show. According to TV Line, Ben Barnes has been granted status as a series regular on The Punisher season 1.
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but TV Line does state that those same rumors indicate he could be portraying Bobby Saint.
The character was portrayed by James Carpinello in the 2004 film adaptation of the property, and his death eventually led to the creation of Frank Castle’s The Punisher alter-ego. He’s not a comic book character.
When we first meet Frank in Daredevil season 2, he’s already lost his family and enacting revenge for their deaths on every criminal he can lay his sights on. During the 13-episode run, the media dubs him The Punisher and by the end we see him don his well-known skull insignia.
We don’t know anymore details about The Punisher season 1, but if Bobby Saint is involved, it could give us a clue as to which direction they’ll be going in for the freshman run.
Barnes is best known for his portrayal of Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia films, as well as the titular character in Dorian Gray. In addition to The Punisher, he’ll also be showing up in HBO’s highly anticipated West World adaptation as the character Logan.
