Julie Murphy’s hit novel, Dumplin’ is being made into a Netflix original movie, and the first trailer has got us so excited for the film’s release.
Fans were blown away by Julie Murphy’s delightful novel, Dumplin’ when it first released in 2015. It was a story about a young, fat girl who takes a stand and discovers confidence and is empowered — without including a weight loss narrative.
It’s a story that young women don’t often get to see portrayed in any sort of media, books or otherwise. So it’s no wonder that Netflix didn’t waste time when it came to snatching up a feature film adaptation of Murphy’s book.
Netflix released a full trailer for the movie, and whether you’re a big fan of the book, you’ve just heard Dumplin’ is a story you can’t miss, or you are obsessed with Dolly Parton, this trailer will have you cheering for Willowdean and her journey to discover who she truly is and, as Parton famously put is, “do it on purpose.”
Dumplin’ stars Jennifer Anniston as Willowdean’s pageant queen mother, Rosie Dickson. When Willowdean (played by Danielle Macdonald) decides to enter her mother’s beauty pageant to push against beauty standards promoted in pageants like her mother’s, Willowdean doesn’t just manage to discover her own confidence, but she manages to inspire her entire town in the process.
As Willowdean calls it, she sparks a protest in high heels against what it means to be truly beautiful. Even better, the movie shows her finding her voice and her confidence without including a story arc that has Willowdean losing weight or adhering to more traditionally accepted standards of beauty.
Stories about fat, young women aren’t frequently told in the media — especially without adding a weight loss arc to the tale, so we’re so excited to see such a great, body-positive story made into a major motion picture. Dumplin’ is directed by Anne Fletcher and the script is written by Kristin Hahn.
You can catch Dumplin’ when it opens in select theaters and will be available for streaming on Netflix on December 7. And the movie’s soundtrack, featuring songs by the one and only Dolly Parton herself, will be available on November 30.
