Need a break from all the drama in the world? Netflix is currently streaming plenty of reality shows that will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Sometimes you just need to step away from crime, thrillers, romance and even your real life, and focus on something a little less stressful. And sometimes you really want to see a reality show, with real people doing real-world things. But when so many reality shows are full of drama, they often just make you feel worse.
Thankfully, Netflix has plenty of shows that are both real and non-stressful, which are perfect for watching at the start of the day, right before bed, or during a relaxing break.
The Casketeers is a show about a funeral home. That may not sound feel-good to you, but you’re wrong: this show is the most heartwarming thing you’ll find on Netflix, and you need to watch it now.
This reality show follows the Tipene family, owners of Tipene Funerals in Auckland, New Zealand, as they go about their daily duties: organizing funerals, preparing bodies for burial, and — of course — leafblowing their parking lot. While the Tipenes and their employees deal with heavy emotional situations, they’re also perfectly suited to their business: they’re kind, sweet, and always know the right thing to say to grieving relatives. They’re also wonderfully silly (when not at funerals), and bring plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to the show.
The Tipenes are Maori, which adds a cultural dimension to their work as funeral directors (you’ll often hear them speaking in te reo). Alongside their Tongan employees, they celebrate each life with a funeral that fits that person’s culture, and explain some of the traditions to non-Islander audiences. Different funeral traditions are fascinating to learn about because they showcase a lot of the most profound and beautiful beliefs humans have about life and death. And The Casketeers makes a point of showcasing them, making every funeral so beautiful that you feel honored to be able to see it play out on screen.
I came away from The Casketeers with a strange sense of relief. I’m happy to know that people like the Tipenes exist in the world. Is that a weird thing to feel while watching a Netflix show? Maybe. But it’s a profoundly inspiring experience that I think everyone should have.
