MTV has put in a series order for three new comedies, each of which is starring a female character. Huzzah!
According to Deadline, the cable network has already given series orders to all three pilots, which they greenlit in September.
MTV continues to move in a different direction, partly in thanks to their new president, Sean Atkins. “We’re looking for creators and stories that capture the passionate voice of youth,” he says. This change began with the hit show Teen Wolf, continued with horror series like Scream and comedy series like Awkward, and will further progress with The Shannara Chronicles, coming out in January.

Two of the shows are still untitled. The first is a “single-camera scripted comedy” starring Nicole Byer of Girl Code fame. According to Deadline, “Byer portrays a young adult who is forced to move in with her sister and four kids in the suburbs after causing a fire in her New York City apartment. Aunt Nicole will offer her own brand of advice to her sister’s kids while trying to get her life back on track.” It will be a half-hour comedy led by Executive Producers Christian Lander and Avi Gilber.
The second untitled project comes from Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont. Deadline’s synopsis reads, “Paige and Jordan may be weed dealers, but in their eyes they are entrepreneurs. Their dope delivery app is quickly gaining popularity with foodies, celebrities and — the most particular and crucial consumer — hipsters. This pilot takes a hilarious look at two girls living in LA: desperate to succeed, find a little romance, and keep their clients happy and high — all with the least amount of effort possible.”
Perhaps most exciting of all is the only named project out of this trio of series. Called Little Darlings and created by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the series is “a dark half-hour comedy about two very unlikely friends taking justice into their own hands and kicking literal ass on their college campus. Jules comes off as the perfect sorority dream girl, but little do her red-cup-toting sisters know, she’s got a completely different agenda come nightfall. Ophelia, your everyday stoner-hacker-hellion, has officially run out of effs to give, and when she discovers Jules may be the masked vigilante exacting justice on campus her interest in college life is re-energized.” This series is executive produced by Stacey Sher and Amanda Lasher, as well as Robinson.
MTV has proven it’s not afraid of testing boundaries. Though not all of its shows succeed (R.I.P. Eye Candy), the network is quickly garnering all the right kinds of attention. Consider us intrigued.
We currently have no idea when any of these series will premiere, though some time in 2016 is a likely guess.
