MTV announced that it is bringing back one of its most iconic reality TV series, The Hills, in The Hills: New Beginnings.
Anymore, reality TV is a pretty constant staple in the options for TV viewing. However, when reality TV really took off in the early 2000s, it was still in that new, exciting phase where we weren’t sure if the shows were staged or not. One such show was MTV’s real-life high school drama, Laguna Beach, and the subsequent spin-off, The Hills.
While by the end of The Hills, viewers were quite certain the show was staged–something MTV even leaned into, ending the show on a soundstage in front of a fake LA backdrop–in the early days of the show (and during Laguna Beach), it seemed like an exciting look into the lives of teenagers and young adults living a far more glamorous life than the rest of us. MTV is trying to recapture that, cashing in on the nostalgia wave by bringing our friends from The Hills back for more drama.
MTV released a quick teaser trailer to promote the show’s return, and even though the clip is super brief (and doesn’t show the face of a single cast member), it will give you lots of fuzzy, nostalgic feels.
It’s not totally surprising to see this show return. After MTV’s success with bringing back the Jersey Shore gang, it was really only a matter of time before we saw other shows from the 2000s come back into our lives.
So what can we expect from The Hills: New Beginnings? Right now, details are scares, but Deadline reports that the show will center around some new friends and many of the original cast (and their new, growing families) are also expected to return. It’s not officially been confirmed, but the 2018 VMAs featured appearances from former cast members like Heidi and Spencer Pratt, Justin Bobby, Jason Wahler, and Audrina Patridge, so it’s likely they’ll be back in the new show.
Kristin Cavallari was not in attendance, she has expressed interest in being in a revival. And though she hosted the 2016 Hills reunion show, it’s unclear if the show’s original protagonist, Lauren Conrad, will appear in New Beginnings.
The Hills: New Beginnings is set for a 2019 premiere on MTV, so we’ll have to wait and see just what crazy, LA adventures are in store for us this time around.
