Just like last month, Hypable columnist Lyle Brandon shares his five most anticipated releases, goals, and premieres for the month of April.
1) The Five-Year Engagement (April 27)
I can’t speak for anybody else, but I personally am extremely excited to see this movie. For starters, it’s written/directed by Nicholas Stoller, the same guy who scribed (and again, directed) Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which happens to be one of my favorite movies. It stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, both actors who I find possess a certain amount of charm unparalleled throughout Hollywood. Segel has really developed into such a talent. He acts, sings, and writes music. Heck, he even reinvigorated the Muppets. Granted, he and I both share the same birthday of January 18th, so it’s possible that it’s in the stars for his humor to be right up my alley. However, from what I can tell by his legion of fans, his hilarity seems to be pretty universal. Emily Blunt has also developed into quite the leading lady. She’s currently the go-to for American films requiring a humorous yet beautiful English actress. Every time the trailer for this movie comes on TV, I get a cramp from laughing when he jumps in the snow, only to discover a fire hydrant strategically buried beneath.
2) Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (April 3)
People like to hate on her, but I love me some Mrs. Minaj. Sure, she’s probably crazy and yes, she may like to dress like an anime porn star, but the girl spits fire in the form of rap and has creativity for days. Rarely do female rappers make it as far as Nicki has, and I think she deserves some credit. With the re-release, Nicki’s fans have been gifted plenty of new songs starting with the record’s lead single, “Starships,” which has now been stuck in my head for the past four days consecutively. Another song I really like from the re-release? “Marilyn Monroe.” Maybe the writers of NBC’s Smash will get a hold of the single and add it into their fictional Marilyn musical, Bombshell.
3) The Kingkiller Chronicles (April)
This past week, I finished re-reading the third novel of the Hunger Games series for the fourth time. Like I do with the Potter series, I have read the novels over and over, each time seeing something differently than I had before. However, there comes a time when the itch for a new tale finds me, and the search for the next literary epic that will change my life begins. A good friend of mine who shares my love of the fantasy genre, recently recommended The Kingkiller Chronicles. Having previously never heard of them, I did some research. From what I gather, the story is told by a single narrator, who states it will take three days to tell his life story. Each novel of the series is one of the three days, resulting in a trilogy. Apparently, the universe in which the books take place is one full of mythical creatures, such as fairies and dragons, but also contains beings with extremely modern problems, such as substance abuse. If any of you readers out there have read any books from the series, please let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. I’m very curious to see how many people have even heard of it, let alone read it.
4) Glee Returns (April 10)
The return of Glee has me feeling somewhat bittersweet. I’m obviously excited for the show to be back and to have a whole new slew of songs to add to my car playlist, but it’s about what comes after that has me a little unsettled. As the plans for after graduation – a.k.a. season 4 – have been kept tightly under wraps by Ryan Murphy and Co., I’m left unsure of what the future holds in store for my precious Rachel Berry, Finn Hudson, and Kurt Hummel. The only thing I do know, is that the show, more than likely, will never be the same again. Part of me would really like for it to stay the same, but I just need to have faith in the brilliant minds of the show’s creators that they will find a genius way to hold on to the magic that they’ve seemed to bottle since the show premiered, while also finding the perfect way to hold on to McKinley’s graduating seniors. What are your thoughts on what season 4 could entail?
5) Visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (April)
Now I know that this isn’t exactly an April release or premiere, per se, but for me it is. Before I relocate back to Los Angeles, I’m making the trek out to Orlando, Florida to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Since I first heard rumblings that a theme park attraction based on my favorite literary series of all time was in the works, I knew I had to go. I’ve waited this long for a few reasons, but primarily because it seemed like it would forever be crowded. Finally, years later, it seems like the perfect time to go. I figured that if I didn’t go before I moved across the country, then I probably wouldn’t ever, and that just was not an option. I simply cannot wait to buy an official Ollivander wand and to deplete the gift shops of what I’m sure will be ridiculously overpriced merchandise. If any of you have been there, be sure to leave me some ride and restaurant recommendations for my stay in Disney! Without them, I’ll probably just be so excited and end up running around like a chicken without its head.
Did I miss anything? Is there something you are particularly hyped about that I didn’t mention? Comment below and maybe next time you’ll see it up on the list!
