Mindhunter season 3 is all but guaranteed, so stay up to date on the latest news and predictions!
While we have yet to receive an official announcement regarding Mindhunter season 3, it seems like news is just on the horizon given the success of season 2. While I found it fascinating if not somewhat unfulfilling, there was a lot to dissect by the season’s end.
It’s true that Dr. Wendy Carr was the real MVP of season 2, but everyone had their part to play. The sophomore outing left us with just nine episodes to consume, as well as quite a few threads hanging that I hope will be picked up in earnest by season 3.
Speaking of, here’s what we know about Mindhunters season 3 so far:
‘Mindhunter’ season 3 release date
The Mindhunter season 3 release date has not yet been officially announced, but we can look back at the previous two seasons to see how everything lined up.
Ahead of the series premiere hitting Netflix on October 13, 2017, the show was renewed for a second season. Despite the good news, it was pretty much radio silence until July 2019 when a release date was finally set. Season 2 aired on August 16, 2019 with a total of nine episodes instead of the previous 10.
So, what does this all mean for season 3? There’s no indication of when we might be getting an official announcement, though it does seem likely given showrunner David Fincher wants to do five seasons of the show.
With the series’ previous track record, don’t expect Mindhunter season 3 to premiere until late Summer or early Fall of 2021.

‘Mindhunter’ season 3 plot wishlist
There’s so much I want to see in Mindhunter season 3. When we left our favorite trio (sorry, Gregg), everyone was still kind of a mess. Holden had gotten his anxiety under control, but he was unable to solve the Atlanta child murders. Bill was mostly able to keep his personal business from affecting his job, but when he returned home, his wife had moved out with their son. Wendy had also just broken up with her girlfriend and was feeling severely underappreciated at work.
Then there was the whole BTK Killer thing going on in the background.
Needless to say, there’s plenty left to explore in Mindhunter season 3. The unit is expanding and doing some promising research and fieldwork, which means more funding but also more politics. Holden, Bill, Wendy, and yes, even Gregg, must continue to figure out where they stand with each other and their new boss, Assistant Director Gunn.
Plus, they’ve got all those murders, too. I’d love to revisit some of the convicted killers we’ve already seen (Kemper is always interesting, and I feel like we hardly got to spend time with Manson), as well as see some new faces. There’s so much left to learn (it’s only the early ’80s, after all), and one of my favorite aspects of the show is watching Holden and Bill interview the killers we all grew up hearing about.
While there’s plenty to contend with at home and in the office, this show also truly shines when our main characters can apply their newfound knowledge to practical situations. The Atlanta murders were a bit of a hit-and-miss for Holden, but he was certainly on the right track. I’d love to see them crack a big case with resounding success, and then witness how that affects their future within the FBI.
Plus, season 2 ended on such a low note. Don’t these characters deserve at least a modicum of happiness in season 3?
