The Assassin’s Creed movie has finally begun production, and we’ve learned that Marion Cotillard will be joining Michael Fassbender for the adaptation.
Yep, the hugely successful Assassin’s Creed video game franchise is getting a movie adaptation. Produced by and starring Michael Fassbender, the Assassin’s Creed movie began pre-production last week.
With only one star announced, it was inevitable that more casting details would begin to leak out sooner rather than later.
Deadline reports that French actress and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard has joined Fassbender in the movie, neatly completing a little Macbeth reunion.
Fassbender and Cotillard played Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in a recent adaptation, which was directed by Justin Kurzel. Kurzel is also set to direct the pair in Assassin’s Creed.
Interestingly, both Cotillard and Fassbender are signed on for several films, suggesting that the Assassin’s Creed movie will try to replicate the success of the games and set up a story told in multiple instalments.
The story details are still being kept under wraps, but it is rumored that Michael Fassbender will play two different roles, one in the present day and one who lived during the Spanish Inquisition. We’re guessing that Marion Cotillard might also find herself playing multiple roles, as their story will likely be a romance.
This suggests that, unlike in the game, the story will center around a reincarnated hero who must relive past events in order to solve a mystery in the present (in the game, our main character simply relives the memories of his ancestors).
Assassin’s Creed is set to open on Dec. 21, 2016.
