Set in an alternative Pokémon timeline, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will see the titular legendary genetic cat wreak havoc on Ash and friends once more.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will release in Japan on July 12, 2019. While an international release has yet to be announced, the first two movies in this alternate timeline, Pokémon the Movie: Pikachu, I Choose You! and Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, received international releases.
The Power of Us was released in a limited theatrical engagement earlier this month, with it hitting paid streaming services, such as iTunes and Google Play, shortly after.
I binged both Pikachu, I Choose You! and The Power of Us in the same week, and found them interesting, but bloated. These “remake” films are a tad more interesting than the still running original series Pokémon theatrical films, but you may want to watch them at home so that you can take a break during the film’s second act.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara, and the screenplay is by Takeshi Shudo. There hasn’t been much released about the film yet, so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what will transpire in it.
Pikachu, I Choose You! set itself in the first 20 or so episodes of the anime, but then deviated in its third act. Other than the inclusion of Lugia (in a very brief sequence), The Power of Us was a completely original story, focusing on Ash helping citizens of Fula City as they contain disasters that threaten the peace of their city.
The Power of Us released in Japan in July 2018, and internationally November 2018. If there is to be an international release for Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, it is likely that the film will follow a similar release schedule and pattern as the second film in the alternate timeline Pokémon films.
