Actor Tom Hopper, better known to Merlin fans as Sir Percival, has landed a starring role in Starz’s new series Black Sails.
The new pirate drama, executive produced by Michael Bay, is described as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, set twenty years before the classic novel takes place. The series will focus specifically on Captain Flint and his crew of men.
Hopper is the first actor to join the new eight-episode series and is set to play Billy Bones, first mate of The Walrus. According to Deadline, Hopper’s character will find himself “caught in the middle of the power struggle between Flint and his main dissenter Singleton.”
Though Hopper is probably best known for his recurring role as Sir Percival on BBC’s Merlin, he is no stranger to television. Hopper has most notably guest starred on an episode of Doctor Who and recently starred alongside Warren Brown in the crime thriller, Good Cop.
Additionally, DigitalSpy has reported that Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall will direct the series’ pilot episode.
Production on Black Sails is expected to start production later this year in Cape Town, Africa. Fans can expect to see the show on Starz sometime in 2014.
