Despite Men in Black 3 taking in more than half a billion at the box office, Sony reveals that they’re planning to reboot the franchise with a new trilogy without Will Smith.
Reboots, reboots, reboots. Studios are stuck on remaking previously successful films, despite most of the remakes failing. We saw this with Sony and The Amazing Spider-Man, and more recently with Fox and Fantastic Four.
But, Sony is apparently ready to let Will Smith take a seat, and remake Men in Black without the man who made the trilogy a hit. While speaking with THR, producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald revealed new details about the upcoming reboot.
THR asked the two veteran producers, “You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?” Walter Parkes said, “We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active.” Both producers seemed excited about the reboot, but when THR asked if Smith would be involved the producer said, “most likely no.”
Laurie MacDonald said, “It will be reinvented as a trilogy.” This is kind of one of the more surprising reboots, since Will Smith IS the reason the films have been successful. His star power, along with his great condescending relationship with Tommy Lee Jones
As we mentioned, Sony hasn’t had much luck rebooting franchises, and while the stories are pretty much endless with Men in Black, losing Will Smith seems like they’ll struggle to get fans excited about a reboot that doesn’t include the actor who made it such a hit.
Either way, we look forward to finding out more about the Men in Black reboot, and if the film will be following a similar buddy cop storyline.
