Melissa McCarthy, star of Ghostbusters, discusses the “confusing” trailer and clears up some apparent uncertainty.
After the Ghostbusters trailer proclaimed that the events of Paul Feig’s franchise reboot would be taking place 30 years after the original movie, fans were left confused about whether this movie was in fact a sequel, a remake, or a reboot of the ’80s classic.
Luckily Melissa McCarthy, who plays one of the movie’s four Ghostbusters, is here to clear up any doubts: Ghostbusters is a reboot of the series, revisiting the story from a new perspective, and with a new generation of comedians.
“It’s a reboot, not a remake,” she says on The Johnjay & Rich Show, via The Hollywood Reporter. “I know it’s weird that they say ’30 years ago’, but in this movie it’s like the first one didn’t happen.”
And, while the plot similarities are obvious — as McCarthy says, “it’s the same thing of four unlikely heroes, it’s in New York City, ghosts are taking over” — the story is ultimately “told totally differently” than the original Ghostbusters.

“I think that it’s very confusing,” she admits. Hopefully there won’t be any confusion now that she’s cleared it up.
Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15, 2016. It also stars Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. It was directed by Paul Feig, a long-time Ghostbusters fan.
We can’t wait to see how Feig brings Ghostbusters into the 21st century. Considering the resurgence of other classic franchises like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Star Trek and Alien, it was only a matter of time before this cult comedy classic returned, too — and we’re excited to see four awesome female leads kick some ghost ass.
