On the heels of a good weekend box office, 20th Century Fox has set a premiere date for The Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials.
The follow up film based on the book of the same name by James Dashner will hit theaters September 18, 2015 – roughly one year from today.
The Maze Runner starring Dylan O’Brien was the highest-grossing film at the box office this weekend with a $32.5 million pull. In addition the film made $37.6 million abroad.

Earlier this month we reported The Scorch Trials was heading into pre-production.
“We’ve got stages, we’ve got crews coming in, Dylan [O’Brien] will be back in a few weeks, we’re building sets, and the script is being written,” said director Wes Ball on September 4. “It’s a bit of a race this time because we’re cautiously optimistic, but we’re feeling excited we’re about to do something that’s way more sophisticated, way more grown up, and really set up a saga here.”
His “it’s a bit of a race this time” remark may’ve been foreshadowing that they were quietly aiming for a September 2015 release.
