In a world of reboots, remakes, and reimaginings, it should come as no surprise that The Matrix is next in line to be reworked.
The Matrix first hit cinemas in 1999 and has since gone on to become a staple of science fiction film. Starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, it tells the story of one man who plays an important role in revealing the truth of his reality and finally ending a war he never even knew was being waged.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Warner Bros. is in early talks to remake the movie. Fans of the original will certainly balk at the idea, but depending on what direction the studio goes in, this project could bring something new and interesting to the table.
Zak Penn, who wrote the story for The Avengers, created Alphas, and has written the screenplay for Ready Player One, is in talks to work on a treatment for the film. There’s even rumors that Michael B. Jordan is already being eyed to star, but with the project barely off the ground, that could definitely change.
The Wachowskis, who created the original franchise, are not involved in the project at the moment and it’s undetermined if they’re being courted to have a hand in the reboot. It certainly would lend credence to a remake if the original creators approved of the new movie.
As a huge fan of the original movie, I’m particularly leery to see them try to remake The Matrix. However, the universe is as interesting as the story, and if Warner Bros. wanted to shed light into a corner we haven’t looked at before, I’d be interested in at least seeing what they’ve got to say.
