Marvel’s Runaways, whose first season aired in its entirety on Hulu from November 2017 through January 2018, is making the jump to broadcast television.
According to Deadline, the premiere episode of Marvel’s Runaways season 1 will debut following the Cloak and Dagger finale on August 2.
The decision was made as part of Freeform and Hulu’s ongoing marketing partnership. As of now, only the first episode has been announced to air, though further could follow if it proves successful. The overlapping potential audiences for Cloak and Dagger and Runaways could give a boost in viewership for both shows.
Shortly following the conclusion of Runaways’ first season on Hulu, a second order of 13 episodes was announced. At San Diego Comic-Con 2018, Cloak and Dagger followed in its footsteps with its own second season order.
The teenage duo of Tandy Bowen (Dagger) and Tyrone Johnson (Cloak) is no stranger to the Runaways in the Marvel comics. They have crossed paths on multiple occasions, so the pairing of their shows on Freeform should come as little surprise, especially as Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Polaski has expressed a desire to cross over with Runaways on screen.
“It was really important for the first season to really establish Tandy and Tyrone, even as people before they become superheroes,” Polaski said at WonderCon 2018. “But I’m a big fan of what Josh [Schwartz] and Stephanie [Savage] did on The Runaways and we’re always talking about when do we get to do our crossover. There’s probably 400 lawyers in the way. I’m excited for however Cloak and Dagger can play in the universe.”
Here’s hoping that Runaways’ broadcast debut will set the wheels in motion for a potential crossover with Cloak and Dagger in the near future.
