You’ve waited and waited and waited. And now, Marvel head Kevin Feige has revealed that a Black Widow movie is the next project the studio wants to tackle.
When Deadline asked Feige on Friday morning if MCU side pieces Falcon, War Machine, Black Widow, or Hawkeye have any chance of getting a solo movie of their own in the foreseeable future, the head of the MCU said that among those characters, Black Widow’s got the best shot.
“We’ve announced the next nine movies, 10 counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we’ll go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly that the one we’re creatively and emotionally committed to doing is Black Widow,” he said.
Asked why Black Widow leads the pack, Feige said, “We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories to tell in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand alone franchise.”
We’re sure Feige is aware that many, many MCU fans have been asking for a Black Widow movie for a long time. And now, after seeing Civil War, we know that Marvel can do right by the female super heroes. So our itch has never been stronger.
We may have to wait until 2019 or 2020 before we see Black Widow appear in her own solo movie, even if it is a priority for Marvel. As Feige said, the studio’s schedule is pretty packed at the moment. Here’s what the remainder of Marvel’s Phase 3 slate looks like:
- 2016: Doctor Strange
- 2017: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok
- 2018: Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1
- 2019: Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2
For now, the closest we’re getting to a Black Widow movie is this brilliant parody by Saturday Night Live, from back when Scarlett Johansson last hosted the sketch show:
