Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season is not due to hit screens until 2019, but that hasn’t stopped the cast from teasing fans as they wrap on filming.
Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, posted to her Instagram account on Saturday, July 8. In the photo Williams is wearing white shoes splattered with blood, a potential clue for what to expect for her character once Game of Thrones returns.
“Goodbye belfast. goodbye arya. goodbye game of thrones. what a joy i’ve had,” Williams’ caption said. “Here’s to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely #immasleepforthenextfouryears #justkiddingidontsleep.”
The #LastWomanStanding hashtag could be something as simple as Williams being the last of the women on set, as filming concludes on the series. However, as Thrones fans know intimately at this point, it could equally suggest that Arya Stark might be one of the few survivors when the dust settles.
When we last left Arya Stark, she had returned to Winterfell, and was finally reunited with her older sister, Sansa, and younger brother, Bran. Though it seemed that the tension which had existed between Arya and Sansa when they were younger had lingered, and was poised to end in a bloody and fatal way, Thrones flipped the script, and finally freed Sansa from Littlefinger’s manipulations. Littlefinger’s execution reinforced the Stark mantra: the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.
With the Night King and his white walkers marching beyond the Wall, Arya will likely have a larger battle than she has ever faced ahead of her. But whether she truly will be the last woman standing will remain to be seen.
