Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner reveals the matching tattoo she shares with costar and friend Maisie Williams.
Turner and Williams displayed their subtle new ink at the Emmy Awards red carpet. Delicately printed on the inside of each young woman’s forearm are the numbers “07.08.09.”
The costars’ matching tattoos recalls the date August 7, 2009 — the day Turner and Williams were cast as Sansa and Arya Stark on Game of Thrones. The series not only launched their acting careers (Sophie Turner starred as Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and Maisie Williams has appeared in several films, as well as a major arc on Doctor Who), but also their friendship.

“She’s one of my best friends in the whole world,” Turner tells E! The pair had long planned to get a matching tattoo if they made it all the way through Game of Thrones, but given recent events on the series, decided to carpe the diem… or the needle.
“Maisie and I were like, okay, let’s get these ones before anyone kills us!” Turner says, of the “really significant” date.
Williams hasn’t officially shared her tattoo, which is etched in a darker shade than Turner’s peach ink. (Turner’s mother, the actress says, implored her to “make sure it doesn’t show up!”) But the tattoo is visible on Williams’ forearm in shots from the Emmy Awards, and makes a wonderful statement about the on-screen sister’s enduring friendship.
As for the source of their friendship, Turner also shares her enthusiasm about Game of Thrones season 7, though it almost sounds like one or both of the Stark sisters may not make the final cut.
“I was actually speechless. This season is unbelievable, and I think fans are going to be really satisfied,” she says. And in an appropriate echo of Maisie Williams’ script-related freak-out, Turner adds, “It’s crazy.”
Game of Thrones season 7 will air in 2017.
