Prepare to bid farewell to Madam Secretary.
CBS has officially announced that the political drama will end after its upcoming sixth season.
News of the series’ cancellation comes just one week after CBS announced plans to renew the series for a sixth season.
The network announced its decision to cancel Madam Secretary just before their annual Upfront presentation at New York City’s Carnegie Hall on Wednesday (May 15).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, word came straight from CBS Entertainment President Kelly Khal, who noted the importance of leaving long time viewers satisfied with the series’ upcoming conclusion.
“I think it’s important for the network to reward viewers with a proper ending for the show,” said Khal. “It’s hard when a show just goes away. We like to be able to do this, and send the show off with a great deal of respect and celebration.”
As it stands, the Téa Leoni-lead political drama will have 10 episodes to wrap up any loose ends before the series concludes with a sixth and final season.
So what’ll the series’ final season focus on? According to series co-creators Barbara Hall and Lori McCreary, the plan is to follow Elizabeth’s (Téa Leoni) journey though the political primary and presidential election.
Speaking to TV Line shortly after the show’s season 5 finale last month, Hall said: “We’ve always been about pulling back the curtain on the State Department and showing the process of diplomacy, so this is going to be pulling back the curtain on a campaign and everything that that involves.”
It sounds as though Madam Secretary viewers will be in for quite the wild ride as Elizabeth hits the campaign trail when the series’ final season premieres later on this year!
The final season of Madam Secretary premieres this fall on CBS.
