About ‘Lucas’ by Sawyer Bennett:
The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team is stacked with hotshots. But when a new player joins their ranks, he learns that even superstars can’t go it alone when it comes to love.
Lucas Fournier is only serious about one thing: hockey. The league’s fun-loving charmer, Luc is always up for a good prank or a great lay, and he has no intention of settling down. But being traded to the Carolina Cold Fury—and to play alongside his big brother, Max—is no joke. With another title in sight, the last thing Luc wants is to let his new teammates down. To succeed, Luc will need to keep his head in the game and the most . . . er, demanding member of his anatomy in check. But when temptation hits, Luc hits back harder.
Museum curator Stephanie Frazier has always put business before pleasure, which just about explains her nonexistent sex life. But when Stephanie meets Luc at a champagne-fueled gala, she finds herself flirting like crazy — and going home with the uninhibited athlete. For one night, she learns what passion is all about. She just never counted on the little surprise Luc leaves behind. And that’s when things really start to get . . . interesting.
Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling Carolina Cold Fury series can be read together or separately.
‘Lucas’ by Sawyer Bennett review:
Sawyer Bennett has been one of my favorite authors for a few years now, there’s a good chance that if she writes it than I’m going to read it. From her dark romance, contemporary romance, sports romance, and chick lit — Bennett writes it all and writes it well.
The Carolina Cold Fury series has been running for a few years now and is one of my go-to series for a good hockey romance novel. There’s a great range in the characters and the situations that they go through so the series never gets old for me.
Though they’re written to work as stand-alone novels as well as a series, I definitely suggest that anyone who hasn’t checked out the series yet does read the earlier novels because they’re great reads.
In comparison to some of the other books in the series Lucas felt quite predictable, though still enjoyable to read. It follows the surprise pregnancy trope and deals with two people that were not wholly prepared for a baby let alone a relationship.
Both are at rocky times in their lives, with Lucas starting out at a new team and Stephanie not quite sure where her career is going. This causes for many stumbles along the way in their not-quite-a-relationship but more-than-friends saga.
It did feel like this novel was more steamy than some of the more recent ones in the series. Because the couple meet and have a one night stand right at the get-go, there’s zero slow burn like some of the other Carolina Cold Fury series.
For me, this is a plus. Though it did feel like the storyline was missing something when it came to the characters falling for each other. Even though Lucas wasn’t my favorite book in the series I’m still glad to have read it.
Fans of the series will also appreciate the check in with some of our favorite characters in the series. More importantly though, it also sets up the story for the next novel in the series titled Van which I can’t wait to get my hands on.
Lucas by Sawyer Bennett will be released on September 19! Pre-order now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Google, and Kobo. And don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads!
