Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time is inspiring a whole new generation of kids. But if you can’t get enough of it, we’ve got four more movies to check out next.
If you loved A Wrinkle in Time and its unifying message of believing in the power of children, or just delighted the magic, wit, and diverse cast, we’ve got some great recommendations for movies you should watch next.
So, while you wait for A Wrinkle in Time to release at home on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming platforms, give these other gems a shot.
‘Akeelah And The Bee’
Akeelah and The Bee follows the titular 11-year-old Akeelah, who discovers that she has a talent for spelling. Akeelah’s incredible spelling prowess gives her hope that she can make it to the National Spelling Bee. Though she faces objections from her mother, Akeelah never gives up on reaching her goal.
With help from a teacher, her community, and the strength of her own conviction and determination, Akeelah rises above seemingly insurmountable odds to achieve her dreams.
‘Whale Rider’
I’ve recommended Whale Rider for its empowering message before – specifically in the wake of Wonder Woman – and that holds true here as well.
Whale Rider follows Paikea “Pai” Apirana as she attempts to defy tradition and become the next leader of her tribe. In Pai’s culture, only first-born male in the family line is eligible to become a leader.
Pai fights against the expectations of her tribe, and her grandfather, and overcomes them to prove that she has what it takes to lead.
‘Wadjda’
Wadjda is a Saudi Arabian drama, which focuses on the titular Wadjda. She is rebellious and and dreams of owning the green bike that she passes on her way to school every morning. Wadjda wants to race against her friend Abdullah, but riding bikes is frowned upon for girls in her community, so her mother refuses to buy it for her.
Wadjda is a beautiful film about tradition, societal expectations, and rising up to achieve your dreams in the face of them, without undermining how important those traditions can still be.
‘Cinderella’
The ultimate story of overcoming hardship and working towards your dreams. Disney’s straight-to-video live action Cinderella was, and still is, a genuinely empowering and diverse retelling of the classic fairy tale.
Featuring a diverse cast, an uplifting message, and some incredibly catchy songs, Cinderella took the story we all know and love and breathed new life into it. It is, arguably, one of the better adaptations of the story put out.
So, if you’re looking for something a little more magical, this will definitely provide on that part.
