Legends of Tomorrow season 2, episode 6, “Outlaw Country,” saw the return of Jonah Hex as the Legends went back to the Wild West.
When Nate’s time seismograph notes an anomaly back in the 1860s, the Legends head back to the Old West. There, they discover Jonah Hex about to be hanged by bandits. The team intervenes, but Jonah isn’t particularly happy to see them. Then again, I don’t think he’s ever particularly happy about anything.
Speaking of, we learned where he got his scar in this episode: the villain of the week, Quentin Turnbull, was a local strongman who demanded protection pay. When a town wouldn’t pay, he and his men herded all its citizens, including Jonah, into a church and set it on fire. Jonah escaped but was left with disfigurement. As a result, he became Jonah Hex’s white whale.
This gave him something in common with Sara, who is currently dealing with her own revenge situation with Damien Darhk. She’s accepted that she can’t kill Darhk in the past because it would cause too many changes to the timeline, but that doesn’t change her hatred of the man who killed her sister. She understands exactly how Jonah feels.
Of course, Jonah’s not particularly interested in talking about his feelings with a woman, but Sara is a complete badass and ends up earning his respect. It’s her influence that keeps Jonah from killing Turnbull, instead capturing him. Sara has definitely come a long way since going rogue against Darhk in the season premiere.
The anomaly the team is trying to stop is Turnbull mining dwarf star alloy — yeah, the same stuff that Ray used to power his Atom suit. Turnbull stole a detector from a time pirate and is planning to use the alloy to block off the West from the rest of the United States, essentially creating another country that he runs.
Nate, after getting shot with a bullet made of dwarf star and nearly dying gets his Big Damn Hero moment when he stops the train carrying the dwarf star that will close the pass tying the West to the United States. And to top it off, Ray pulls a Cisco and makes Nate a suit that will adjust to the way his body changes when he turns to steel. For all that he’s been talking about being a superhero, he finally gets to look the part.
And now Ray gets to make another Atom suit. I’m not sure if I like him being able to make a new suit so soon after losing his last one. He had a couple of episodes trying to decide what his place on the team was, an episode being Mick’s partner and then an episode teamed up with Jax and Nate. I’m not convinced he had a full arc in that short amount of time before getting back into his own suit.
Also going through an arc is Mick, who is definitely still struggling without his old partner at his side. He tells Amaya — who he’s paired with in this episode — that he’s an animal that just wants to watch the world burn. This was such an interesting pairing, as Amaya reminds Mick she knows a thing or two about animals. She recognizes the animal instincts in Mick, but she also knows there’s more to him than that.
And she’s absolutely right. Anyone who has watched even a small part of his arc play out would see that. Plus, it’s fitting that this came up in this episode, as season 1’s Old West episode marked Mick’s return to the team after being Chronos, the beginning of his arc. Besides Sara, Mick is the character I find myself most invested in this season, and I look forward to seeing where his arc goes next.
Finally, Stein has to sit the mission out because he’s having headaches that turn into full-blown visions of a woman he doesn’t know. The more he gets these visions, though, the more he thinks he loves this woman. He and Jax theorize that interacting with his younger self in 1987 created some kind of anomaly that changed the trajectory of his life.
Does anyone else feel sorry for Clarissa Stein? That poor woman.
Note: Legends of Tomorrow will not air Thursday, November 24, because of Thanksgiving.
