We definitely saw some plot lines move forward in Legacies season 2, episode 3, didn’t we? Well, except for in Josie’s case. That CERTAINLY wasn’t progress.
I may not have loved this episode as much as last week’s, but it was not short on any sort of drama. From the game, to Lizzie’s newest love interest, to Landon and Josie’s relationship, to Josie’s witchiness (or should that be a “B”?), to this week’s crazy huge monster, Legacies season 2, episode 3 wasn’t pulling any dramatic punches, that’s for sure.
How should we dig into all this drama? Should we start with… Lizzie and her new invisi-beau?
Lizzie and the beast?
Okay, so Lizzie is definitely smitten, but there’s clearly more to Sebastian than meets the eye. (Okay, sorry about that, but I really just couldn’t resist.) Honestly, I love the two of them together, and I’m intrigued by his weirdness. How the hell is he invisible?
My first instinct is that he’s projecting, sort of like Silas did in the well that one time. Maybe Sebastian is desiccating somewhere under the Salvatore school and got a small dose of blood thanks to Kaleb and M.G.’s messy job of disposing that skull tower thingie from the season 1 finale. And since he probably needs a hell of a lot more blood to pull himself out of his crypt, he’s unintentionally (or maybe completely intentionally) projecting his consciousness outside of his prison.
That would definitely explain why he was able to be on grounds when the school has all sorts of magical barriers protecting itself.
This is all speculation, of course, so feel free to give us all your best Sebastian theories about Legacies season 2, episode 3 in the comments! I want to know what everyone is thinking about his powers of invisibility, especially since that’s not a vamp ability we’ve ever seen before.
Josie needs to check herself
I mean, I love her, but this is definitely not the kind of standing up for herself that I think Penelope had in mind when she left. Honestly, I’m kind of curious if Penelope had to leave to let Josie go down this path, and maybe (HOPEFULLY) Penelope will show up later this season and tell her just that.
First loves (or at least the first significant one for Josie that we know about) can have a major impact, so hearing that her first love doesn’t recognize her would definitely stop Josie in her tracks if she drifts too far down the path into darkness.
Okay, so all that pontificating aside, I was NOT proud of Josie in Legacies season 2, episode 3. She was mean, brash, insensitive, and downright awful to just about everyone. Like, I get maybe being a little jealous of Hope’s (unintentional) flirting, but Josie treated Landon like garbage during the game. I am so not okay with that.
And that move with Vardemus’ spell? That reeks of Harry using Sectumsempra without knowing what it was going to do in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Like, did she have any idea what was going to happen? She seemed pretty shocked, but she’s been studying magic long enough to have some idea what the Latin she was saying may have meant. Either way, it doesn’t bode well for how this new independent Josie is going to handle the temptations Vardemus will be continuously throwing her way.
I really hope she learns about the greater consequences of her actions, too. By the end of Legacies season 2, episode 3, we know Ethan had a football scholarship which was going to be his ticket to college and beyond, but that disappeared in a nanosecond thanks to Josie Saltzman. I hope someone tells her what her selfishness cost Ethan. She may not know him, but the Josie we know and love would never want to ruin someone’s entire life to win a football game.
Alaric vs. Vardemus is going to give me life this season
… although Alaric may need a magical glow up to stand a chance against him. UNLESS CAROLINE COMES TO TOWN TO DEFEND HIS HONOR! Yes, please. So much yes.
Anyway, every time these two faced off in Legacies season 2, episode 3, I hated Vardemus just a little bit more. Nobody treats my Alaric Saltzman that way. He made a huge mistake last season, but, in his defense, we all know the horrors he’s seen humans suffer at the hands of the supernatural.
The Raf attack is back, pack!
Okay, so I HAD to fit that Mighty Ducks joke in there. Hehe. But I am SO BEYOND ECSTATIC to have Raf back in his human form. I’m heartbroken that he doesn’t remember Hope, but I’ll get over it. He’s human again and Landon has someone other than Josie to lean on. This is going to be especially important once Josie starts working more closely with Vardemus. For some reason, the new headmaster has chosen her as his pet project, and I am very glad Landon will have someone else looking out for his well being once Josie’s priorities start to waver.
What the hell is a Vardemus?
I’m starting to think Vardemus killed whomever Caroline was sending to Dorian to be the new headmaster and slid into his place instead. There’s just no way our badass vampire momma would have failed to see through his clearly evil facade. He has some seriously twisted priorities, a horrible sense of right and wrong, and a creepily unhinged jaw problem.
Something’s not right here, and I can’t believe Caroline would have knowingly sent this guy to teach her girls how to be the best witches they can be. ESPECIALLY after all the hard work Lizzie put into her health and well being over the summer break.
Anybody have any guesses as to what Vardemus is? I’ve seen a few theories on Twitter so far after Legacies season 2, episode 3, but I’m curious if anyone knows the how, why, and what about him now that we’ve seen… well… THAT JAW THING.
Nothing but sympathy for the hardest working tribrid in town
I know Maya was sort of kidding a little, but her “We’re all counting on you” to Hope was seriously hard to hear. Everyone is counting on her, all the time, but now none of them even remember how much they are counting on their tribrid badass to save the day. It makes my heart hurt for Hope all the more.
Also, I don’t like how Landon talked about her to Josie. I mean, after all she did in this episode, with trying to sacrifice herself to save him, freeing Raf from his wolf form, and everything, Landon still seems to be suspicious of her motives. Like, I get that he just found out Hope’s both a witch and a werewolf in this episode, but his tone made it seem like he thought of her as a threat. Clearly she’s not interested in hurting anyone, or she definitely would have by now.
Ultimately, I’m glad Maya and Ethan are proving to be loyal friends, and that their mother isn’t the kind of hard ass sheriff who can’t listen when her daughter tells her Hope’s innocent.
I know Julie Plec hinted that both siblings would take to crushing on our girl wonder, but I honestly just really want her to have a good friend. Someone who doesn’t want or need anything from her but friendship. Our girl deserves that much, especially since she’s suffering so much now that she’s out of Malivore and back in the real world, but still forgotten.
The life of a human in Mystic Falls
I don’t have much to say about our humans, but I had to take a second to feel REALLY badly for Ethan. I mean, he truly didn’t deserve what Josie did to him. I hope sometime in the near future someone heals him with some magic or mixes him a vamp blood smoothie or something so his arm heals up seamlessly.
Other random thoughts:
- LIZ FORBES REFERENCE! I mean, I knew we were going to get at least one now that we have a new sheriff, but I didn’t expect to get so emotional about it.
- I love that M.G. flashes his vamp-reading skills as a bargaining chip. That’s one ability I kinda wish I had sometimes.
- Alaric officially cannot step foot on Salvatore School campus anymore. I don’t like this, and never will, especially since Josie is Vardemus’ pet project.
