Legacies showed up at NYCC to screen the pilot and give up some delicious details about the upcoming series.
Creators of the show, Julie Plec and Brett Matthews, along with stars Matt Davis (Alaric Saltzman), Danielle Rose Russell (Hope Mikaelson), Jenny Boyd (Lizzie Saltzman), Kaylee Bryant (Josie Saltzman), Quincy Fouse (M.G.), Aria Shahghasemi (Landon Kirby) and Peyton Alex Smith (Rafael) all came to NYCC to premiere the pilot episode of Legacies and to answer some questions about their hard work.
If the reaction of the audience in the room is any indication, fans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are going to go crazy for the new series. Since the world and several characters are so familiar, the pilot feels like you’re just stepping back into your old home. The crowd went wild when the title block was shown, and they screamed, gasped, and chuckled at so many moments throughout the episode.
Stay tuned to Hypable for a more in-depth review of the episode, but for now, here are the tidbits we learned from the cast and creators at NYCC.
- Legacies will be much funnier than both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, which Julie Plec credits Brett Matthews for. “As each episode goes on, the show just get lighter and brighter,” she said. Matthews doesn’t have a favorite character to write jokes for, but told us that Lizzie Saltzman ends up with a lot of the comedic material.
- The students of Mystic Falls High School will play a form of villain in Legacies! “They’re dicks,” Plec bluntly stated.
- Alaric as Headmaster will be “somewhere between Professor X and Dumbledore,” Matt Davis told the NYCC audience.
- There’s much more to Landon Kirby than meets the eye, but we won’t spoil anything more than that. However, don’t feel too out of the loop, because Shahghasemi doesn’t even fully know what’s going on with his character either. In fact, he hinted that Landon himself may not even know!
- Milton, or “MG” as he prefers to be called, is the only vampire we see in the Legacies pilot. He’s a new vampire, so he’s just learning how to control himself at the Salvatore Boarding School. Quincy Fouse said that we would “eventually” discover his history and explore how he became a vampire.
- “MG is a person that’s searching for love, which makes him very easy to manipulate,” Fouse said. However, this doesn’t only mean romantic love. “He really just wants people to find home in.”
- Lizzie Saltzman has a form of bipolar disorder, and Jenny Boyd has been doing research on the condition to be able to portray her character well.
- Matt Donovan and Alaric are on good terms, but Julie teased that there’s some “tension between them that could go south” if there are any incidents in Mystic Falls with the students.
- Jeremy Gilbert is working for the school “in the field,” and will appear in Legacies in episode 3.
- Slight spoiler alert to get the shippers guessing…fans of The Vampire Diaries have a new love triangle to look forward to!
- There’s hope that we could see the children of some of our favorite characters in Legacies! “In the life of this show there could be a beautiful young Bennett or a delightful young Salvatore. They’re not there yet because they haven’t yet needed such educational guidance from Dr. Saltzman,” Plec divulged. Since Damon and Elena’s children would be humans, this would have to mean they become vampires or gain some other supernatural ability, which would be very interesting.
- There are definitely some parallels between the Saltzman sisters and the Salvatore brothers. They’re not operating on the same opposite poles that the brothers started on, but Josie is definitely the more altruistic and Lizzie is completely driven by her heart and her desires. Taking it a step further, Bryant added that “Lizzie is very open about that darkness that she struggles with and Josie works very hard to make sure that her’s is not seen.”
- Josie is more like Alaric, and Lizzie takes more cues from Caroline. “Josie and Alaric are very similar. They’re constantly looking out for everybody else instead of themselves,” Bryant said. Boyd added, “Lizzie may have tendencies similar to her uncle (Kai!!), but she really identifies Caroline as her mom. I think she carries a lot of Caroline’s traits with her.”
- It looks like Legacies will explore the Gemini side of the twins. “They don’t know much,” the actresses said. “It’s a story line that we’re exploring throughout the show because it’s a big part of who we are as twins.”
- Bryant, who’s a huge fan of the Mystic Falls saga, said that “there are so many tidbits of the TVD universe and The Originals universe,” in the show. This includes a couple of great subtle ones in the pilot that we won’t spoil for you.
- Legacies doesn’t only reference its preceding series, there are also some fun Harry Potter and Twilight references.
