A Knives Out sequel is officially in the works according to Lionsgate, which means even more of Daniel Craig’s delightful Benoit Blanc!
After making one of the most divisive Star Wars movies to date, writer/director Rian Johnson followed that franchise entry with a film that was widely adored by both audiences and critics.
As an original story with stakes that had nothing to do with the fate of the world, Knives Out represented the kind of film that studios — in this age of big budget remakes and adaptations — seem reluctant to make in this modern age of filmmaking.
However, the gamble paid off handsomely. Knives Out went on to gross $294 million worldwide against a $40 million budget and was nominated for a bevy of awards, including the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the upcoming Oscars.
Given that level of commercial and critical success — and with fans clamoring for another murder-mystery story starring a delightful Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc — it seemed like it was only a matter of time until we got confirmation of a sequel. Indeed, rumors of a sequel have been swirling for weeks, with writer/director Rian Johnson informing THR that he was working on a follow-up film centered around Benoit Blanc a few weeks ago at a Golden Globes party.
At that time, though we knew that Johnson was working on the film, there had been no official word that Lionsgate had indeed greenlit production.
However, whatever doubt may have been lingering can now be put completely to rest, as according to Deadline, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said Thursday during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that a sequel to Knives Out has officially been greenlit. He even hinted that production start for a follow-up was imminent.
Though Knives Out boasted an all-star cast including Ana De Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette, the sequel will be focused on Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc solving another mysterious crime. However, given the star caliber of the first film, we’re almost sure to get another star-studded cast for the second outing. Time to put on your fancasting hat!
