Justice League Dark — DC’s occult-focused superhero spinoff team — will be coming to TV and film, thanks to a new deal with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.
It may be a while before we see Warner Bros. take another swing at a Justice League film, but it looks like the studio isn’t shy about going for a Justice League Dark adaptation or two.
Deadline reported yesterday that J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot will be exclusively developing both film and TV ideas based on DC’s Justice League Dark universe at Warner Bros.
The team first premiered in a September 2011 issue of Justice League Dark #1 and features characters who are either well-versed in the occult or too offbeat to join up with the mainstream Justice League team.
While the comic book team initially featured John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna, like all superhero teams, the lineup is constantly changing.
Justice League Dark members have included Swamp Thing, centuries-old vampire Andrew Bennett, the shapeshifting Black Orchid, the well-spoken monster Frankenstein, the Greek character-based Pandora, and Nightmare Nurse, a hero who can heal supernatural wounds.
The current comic book lineup includes Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Man Bat, Detective Chimp, Doctor Fate, and John Constantine, with appearances from characters such as Animal Man and Deadman.
As the deal is still in its beginning stages, we won’t know what exactly will be developed out of the Justice League Dark universe — whether that means an adaptation that focuses on the team as a whole or properties that focus on specific members of the team.
However, it’s being reported that Bad Robot’s Head of Motion Pictures Hannah Minghella and Head of Television Ben Stephenson will soon be taking meetings with talent reps and their writing clients on which characters will get their own projects.
