NBC has officially given the green light to a new period drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has officially picked up a new series from Julian Fellowes called The Gilded Age.
The network has given the new show a 10-episode order and plans to debut the new series sometime in 2019.
It’s great news for Fellowes and fans of his storytelling — especially considering that The Gilded Age has been in the works for quite some time. The series, which was first put into development in 2012, will be written by Fellowes himself. He’ll also be executive producing alongside Gareth Neame.
In a statement announcing the series’ order, Fellowes revealed that writing The Gilded Age is “the fulfillment of a personal dream.”
As with Fellowes’ hugely successful Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age is a period piece. This time, however, the story will be set in the late 1800s in New York City.
In addition to announcing the series’ order, NBC also released an official description for the series:
The Gilded Age in 1880s New York City was a period of immense social upheaval, of huge fortunes made and lost, and of palaces that spanned the length of Fifth Avenue. In the series, Marian Brook is the wide-eyed young scion of a conservative family who will embark on infiltrating the wealthy neighboring family dominated by ruthless railroad tycoon George Russell, his rakish and available son Larry, and his ambitious wife Bertha, whose ‘new money’ is a barrier to acceptance by the Astor and Vanderbilt set. Marian is about to experience a whole new world springing up right outside her front door.
