It looks like Joss Whedon is going back to his girl power roots after his stint at Marvel!
The Wrap has learned exclusively that Joss Whedon’s next project is “about a girl.” Specifically, “about a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh**.”
That might not be much to go on, but considering his previous projects about girls and the unbelievable sh** they’ve gone through — Buffy, Dollhouse and the Fray comic book series, specifically — we’re officially excited.
“It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same,” he teased. “I’m just writing about something I care about, so it’s a little terrifying and it’s taking a little longer [than usual]. But I think it will be good!”
Previously, Whedon has divulged that writing through the end of the script made him very emotional, telling Variety, “I wrote all the way through to the end of the movie, and I was crying so hard in public.”
This is the most specific news we’ve had about Whedon’s post-Marvel projects since his revelation last year at SDCC that he was working on a comic book series about a female Victorian-era Batman. Perhaps his script is something in the same vein? Or, knowing Whedon, it’s something completely different but no less inspiring.
Joss Whedon has been very public about his issues working for Marvel, helming first the smash hit 2008 Avengers, and following it up with the less warmly received Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2012.
He has admitted to The LA Times that the collaborative process “a little bit broke me,” but continues to stand by very proud of the movie. He also has nothing but praise for Marvel president Kevin Feige, whom he says “fought a mighty fight” to get Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie, Captain Marvel, on the schedule at all.
