For the first time, lead Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence is responding to the departure of director Gary Ross from the film franchise.
Earlier this year Ross had made clear he had every intention of returning to direct Catching Fire, but a tight filming schedule caused by Lawrence’s X-Men sequel commitment forced Ross to leave because he wanted more time.
“When I first heard the news, I was devastated because I adore Gary,” said Lawrence to the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I didn’t see it coming. I couldn’t understand. I called him and he basically said, ‘I don’t have time to give 100 percent to this movie.’ My devastation was replaced with respect for him for stepping out when he felt that he couldn’t give his all. So, as much as I miss him, I completely respect him for making that decision.”
In the hours leading up to Ross’ official announcement, co-star Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) made clear that the director was “the only one” to direct Catching Fire.
The new interview with Lawrence moved into her thoughts on the new director, Francis Lawrence (no relation). “Francis is absolutely amazing. The actors feel very free; he’s not controlling at all. He knows everything inside and out so you feel supported. I’m really happy.”
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia over the next couple months. A huge number of on-set photos have appeared in recent days depicting nearly all of the cast on the scene.
Thanks, Mockingjay.
