Oscar-winner Jared Leto has finally revealed some details about his preparation for his role as the Joker in Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad.
The super villain casting is excellent, and daring, considering Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight is still fresh in the minds of moviegoers. But Leto is up to the task, and tells Billboard that he’s, “trying to gain a lot of weight.” Which means he has to eat every couple of hours, which is rough apparently, as the actor says, “I’m terrible at eating a lot.”
Leto joins a starstudded cast, which includes the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, and previously Tom Hardy. Hardy dropped out of the role of Rick Flagg, and has yet to be replaced despite rumors that Jake Gyllenhaal had been in talks.
But Jared Leto is no longer the outsider in this film. Despite the starstudded cast, he’s technically the biggest name in Suicide Squad as he comes off his Oscar win for his portrayal of Rayon in last year’s excellent film Dallas Buyers Club. Leto impressed everyone with his impeccable performance as Matthew McConaughey’s transgendered sidekick in the award-winning film.
He reveals that he’s incredibly excited to take on the challenging role of the Joker, and says, “The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right? [He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.”
His description of the character makes it sound like they’ll be going for something new, and we feel like this film could be very unique in a time where superheroes have become the norm. Suicide Squad will see a pack of super villains teaming up, but we imagine there will be quite a lot of struggling within the group as well.
Suicide Squad is being helmed by David Ayer, who directed the recent WWII film with Brad Pitt titled Fury. Warner Bros.’ president Greg Silverman has said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Shooting for Suicide Squad is set to begin in Canada this April, and we look forward to hearing more about this massively talented cast of super villains. Suicide Squad will be released on August 5, 2016.
