Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has officially found his next project and it’s bound to serve up a heavy dose of nostalgia.
EW reports that James Gunn is officially working on a revival of iconic 70s cop series Starsky & Hutch for Amazon.
The original buddy cop series originally ran on ABC from 1975 to 1979 and starred Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul as Starsky and Hutch, respectively. The upcoming Amazon series, which Gunn will be working on with Fast & Furious producer Neal Moritz, is described as being a continuation of the television series.
Gunn took to his official Facebook page on Thursday (August 31) evening to share the news in a lengthly post with his fans, and to give the world some context as to why he’s so excited to be working on the project.
“When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first ‘adult’ show I ever saw, and I fell in love. It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer ’70s threads, and muscle cars,” wrote Gunn. “So when Neal— the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise — asked me if I wanted to be a part of an all new Starsky & Hutch on TV, I was instantly intrigued.”
From there, Gunn said he started dreaming up his idea for what the perfect Starsky & Hutch would entail. It would be nothing like the 2004 movie remake which starred Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller. Instead, Gunn says he envisioned a series “that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way.”
“Like Guardians of the Galaxy did with the space opera, it would honor the genre while turning it inside out,” continued the director.
The director then went on to explain that the team behind the continuation settled on Amazon for a home for the upcoming series because they felt as though Amazon would grant them “the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of the genre from time to time.”
