Even if you hate Iron Fist, you have to admit Misty and Colleen make one hell of a duo — and they deserve nothing less than their own spinoff series.
Note: There are minor Iron Fist season 2 spoilers below.
Misty and Colleen first met in The Defenders, where they teamed up to protect their city from The Hand, alongside their respective superpowered friends. Misty saved Claire that day, but in the process she lost an arm to Colleen’s former mentor, Bakuto. Colleen blamed herself, but Misty told her it’s just part of the job.
Still, Misty had to get used to only having one arm. In Luke Cage season 2, we see her training with Colleen, who didn’t go easy on her just because of her disability. It was a hard lesson to learn, but Misty is a quick study. She could still easily hold her own in a fight, and that bar scene with these two ladies kicking ass was one of the highlights of that season.
After being equipped with a bionic arm, thanks to Danny Rand, Colleen and Misty come face to face again in Iron Fist season 2. Their easy interactions have been enough to convince me that we desperately need a Daughters of the Dragon spinoff.
For those who don’t know (and haven’t already figured it out), the Daughters of the Dragon is made up of Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. They’ve existed since 1977 and their name was given to them by Davos, who has featured in both the first and second seasons of Iron Fist. Since their initial introduction, these two have shown up in varying comic runs as supporting characters.
Thanks to their popularity in both the Iron Fist and Luke Cage Netflix series, the two got their own comic in 2018.
Iron Fist season 2 just continues to prove these two deserve their own spinoff series as well. This season in particular has the two of them cementing their friendship, moving beyond the tragedies in their past, and teaming up to kick some serious ass.
As soon as Misty got out of her car and walked back into Colleen’s life, the series came alive. As I said in my review, I don’t particularly like the show or Danny Rand as a character, but I would happily lay down my life for the Daughters of the Dragon.
One of the best things about these two women is the way they support each other. Neither one is hesitant to call the other out on their bullshit. When this happens, they each listen and adjust, instead of getting defensive. The mutual respect they have for each other pierces through their default setting of charging headfirst into the fray and not letting anyone tell them otherwise.
I can’t talk about this duo without touching on their various fight scenes together. The bar scene, the training match, the fight against Mary Walker, the tussle with the Crane Sisters, and the final showdown of the season show us how well Colleen and Misty have each other’s backs. They can both easily hold their own individually, but if you get them in a room together? You better watch out.
As much as I love the place these two have carved out for themselves on their respective TV shows, I would love to see them take some time away from the craziness Luke and Danny are always stirring up. Both of them have found such a supportive friend in each other that it would be nice to watch them work on themselves away from all the superpowers.
And that line about how well “Knight” and “Wing” sound together was cute, but it also didn’t feel like a throwaway comment. Is Marvel asking us if we’d be interested in a team-up between these two? If so, then the answer is yes.
While I do love Jessica Jones, there’s enough room in New York City for another detective agency without one being in competition with the other. In the comics, these two form a company known as Knightwing Restorations, which would also feed into the talk Misty has with Colleen in Iron Fist season 2 about her on-the-nose instincts.
Plus, how cool would it be to have Colleen and Misty team up with Jessica for an episode or two?
The Daughters of the Dragon have been in countless issues here and there, but they deserve more than just supporting character status. Simone Missick and Jessica Henwick have undeniable chemistry, and this is the perfect opportunity to put them in a spotlight they never got in the comics.
With Jessica as the only headlining female character in The Defenders, wouldn’t it be incredible to see two women of color allowed the opportunity to step up to the plate in a similar manner?
It’s not like there isn’t precedence, either. Marvel was so impressed by Jon Bernthal in Daredevil season 2 as The Punisher that they gave him his own spinoff series. Colleen and Misty could just as easily hold their own.
