Although cut from Divergent, Summit today revealed who will play the character of Uriah in Insurgent.
Keiynan Lonsdale will take on the role for the highly-anticipated Divergent sequel which opens next March.
The actor, who’s 22 years old, is a virtual unknown. According to his IMDb profile he had roles in the television series Dance Academy and appeared in the film Razzle Dazzle in 2007.
A YouTube channel for the actor shows that he’s an aspiring musician hailing from Australia.
The Insurgent movie began shooting in Atlanta late last month, and casting announcements have been trickling in steadily since then. In recent weeks we’ve learned that Rosa Salazar will play Lynn, Daniel Dae Kim will play Jack Kang, and Naomi Watts will play Four’s mother. Additional casting announcements are expected as filming continues.
Fans were disappointed when they learned that Divergent had cut Uriah from the first movie. Author Veronica Roth responded to the outcry by telling fans that they had to cut him only because they couldn’t do his character justice. “It is understandably disappointing when a favorite character doesn’t make it on screen,” she wrote on her blog in April 2013. “However, what I do think is encouraging is that the people working on the movie are taking the role of Uriah so seriously and taking so much care to get him right.”
In the book by Roth, Uriah is a divergent, Dauntless-born initiate who befriends Tris. The two characters first met during the capture the flag game.
Insurgent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. It will open in theaters March 20, 2015 and is directed by Robert Schwentke.
