When Frozen voice actress Idina Menzel was asked to address the “Give Elsa a Girlfriend” campaign, she had nothing but enthusiasm.
Disney, in a shocking GLAAD report, was revealed to have had exactly zero LGBT characters in its major 2015 movies (including its Lucasfilm and Marvel subsidiaries).
In response to this outrageous lack of representation, and just because it’d be awesome, the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign first launched by Feminist Culture founder Alexis Isabel Moncada has gained major traction online.
Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend

Elsa, the main protagonist in Disney’s widely successful Frozen franchise, has not yet had a love interest of either gender. The badass queen is a shining example of independent women who don’t need a love interest for their story to be interesting, and yet having the sequel give her a female love interest would undoubtedly be a fantastic step forward for LGBT inclusivity in Hollywood.
And if you ask Idina Menzel (who voices Elsa, and gives a pitch perfect rendition of “Let it Go”), you’ll find no lack of support for the idea.
““I think it’s great,” she told ET at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, adding that she’d support Elsa “no matter what.”
Of course Menzel has no control over the story, and was quick to add, “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.” Either way, the character has “changed her life.”
Frozen 2 is definitely happening, though no plot or release date has yet been announced. If Elsa did indeed have a same-sex love interest, she’d be the first animated LGBT Disney character ever in the history of the company.
