Did you get a chance to watch the Merlin finale? If so, what did you think of the episode overall and did you have a favourite moment or scene?
AV: I managed to catch the finale after it aired as I was out of the country. I thought it was a fitting ending to a wonderful series – but of course, I’m biased. I particularly enjoyed all of the Camlann stuff. I think that Justin Molotnikov, the director, had a mammoth task in filming those two eps, the tone of them change considerably from scene to scene – but it was the fighting and the big battle that caught my eye. While I was watching, I actually got so hyped about it, I forgot what was about to happen (me killing the King!).
As a fan, did you think the ending of the series was satisfying? Were you left with any unanswered questions?
AV: It’s a tough question because I’ve been involved with the series and I know the choices that were made behind the scenes. Some stories were dealt with quite quickly, but you only have two 45 minute slots to cram everything in. Personally, I was extremely satisfied and thought that everyone involved did a great job.
AV: They have responded positively and that was just amazing to hear and read, it really was. My trepidation about taking on the role, the importance of the character and also the responsibility of replacing Asa [Butterfield] all weighed heavily on my shoulders throughout filming, so I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of the fans. As far as my career goes, I guess I’ve gained some trust within the network that I’m an actor that can do a job. An actor that can be relied upon.
Out of all the roles you’ve done, which one has stood out to you the most? Is there one character which you’ve particularly identified with or who has taught you something?
AV: I’ve loved every role I’ve taken – you have to, or otherwise you shouldn’t be doing it. Mordred was a challenge, but Keenan was a risk so I guess that’s the one where I poured my heart and soul into it and came out of it the better person.
You have taken a lot of roles in historical dramas, is this a conscious decision on your part? Do you find yourself drawn to certain historical periods?
AV: Not particularly. It’s never conscious to set out to place yourself in an era. I generally think I have a face for the past. Casting directors can easily see me as someone from the 60’s or Camelot, but I’d never go in for a British slasher set on an East London estate or one of the many endless football hooligan films – it’s just not my thing. The trouble now is that the more I do of period pieces, the more I begin to like it and will happily stay there!
After Privates, what’s next for you? Do you currently have any projects lined up?
AV: Stuff is happening, there’s talks and chats and goings on. Fingers crossed!
Don’t miss Vlahos in Privates, airing every day this week at 14:15 on BBC One! Have you seen Privates yet, and if so, what do you think? And do you agree with Vlahos that Mordred didn’t need any redemption? Share your thoughts in the comments!
