HTGAWM season 6, episode 8, “I Want to be Free,” delivered a key piece of information for the flash forward. Here’s our review of the episode.
It’s that time of the How to Get Away With Murder season again! That time when they start unraveling their own mystery in earnest, getting us closer to actually figuring out what questions we should be asking. The fact that we’re already here is making me so sad that this is the last season of HTGAWM, but also so excited to see what comes next.
HTGAWM season 6, episode 8 began with what I like to call an extremely, tastefully done ad for the Disney+ streaming service. Do you now have a sudden craving to watch Disney’s first animated feature, Snow White ? Disney+ has the cure for that!

I didn’t get much from the exam storyline other than the reveal at the end. Michaela’s confused about whether or not she’s actually an independent woman, which I personally feel she’s wrong to question. I think she’ll also realize that very soon. However, this might be affected if she ends the season with a man on her arm or not.
Since Michaela’s story began with her clinging to a relationship with a man who she knew was wrong for her, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for them to end her story with her being alone and untethered. However, finding real love and accepting an actual partner, rather than a stepping stone, would also be a great conclusion to her story arc.
Other than that, I liked the honest conversation between Connor and Oliver, and I’m intrigued to see how this builds to Oliver confessing to murder. Also, puppies. The puppies were very cute.
Most of HTGAWM season 6, episode 8 surrounded the wrongful death suit. It was nice to have an episode of season 6 that was fairly concentrated to one story, and I loved the one they chose to focus on.
At the beginning of this episode, I was happy to see Bonnie really be in the driver’s seat for a change. She does always seem to be shielded by Annalise or the DA, and it hasn’t gone well when she’s tried to go out on her own in the past. I was hoping to see her fight for something and pull out a win on her own.
Unfortunately, she was removed from the case almost immediately! It was cool to see Tegan step in, but I would’ve preferred it if Bonnie had been the one at the helm. Obviously, the whole thing didn’t end well for her, but it still would’ve been great to see what she could do.
Random penthouse girl is now my number one enemy after that stunt she pulled with Bonnie’s brakes. The fact that something like that is possible is absolutely terrifying. Annalise and her team need to start staying away from technology, which is just way too hackable, and get back to basics.
While the car crash bruised Bonnie pretty bad, it’s nothing compared to the wound that she now has from Frank and Annalise’s betrayal. My heart is broken from the realizations that she now has to deal with. I hope she can find her way to the road to recovery before the end of HTGAWM season 6, but I definitely couldn’t fault her if she didn’t.
I also hope Nate can find some closure now that they know the truth, but it looks like he’ll continue to press the issue. The Governor is obviously willing to stoop to any level, so I’m worried for everyone’s safety if this case continues. We still haven’t seen Nate in the flash forwards, so he could be the next victim.
We learned something about Tegan in HTGAWM season 6, episode 8, that might give her a reason to continue pursuing this case, rather than accepting that insane sum of money. She “accepted help” from Jorge Castillo to help her cope with her family’s death. I can’t imagine that help was financial, so I’m at a loss for what he could have done for her. However, whatever it is, I’m sure he’s not done holding it over her head.
Finally, back to the flash forward scene. Luckily, it looks like my continued skepticism regarding Annalise’s death has paid off! Annalise is (probably) not dead! My best guess is that she has faked her death to frame the Governor and take her down, once and for all. They keep taking swings at her and missing, so this could be one last ditch attempt to win.
I don’t know about you guys, but I won’t trust that “Justine” is going anywhere good until I see the driver of that car. Like I said, technology is way too hackable. Too many things have gone too wrong for me to believe that things will just work out.
All of this makes me wonder how certain Annalise is of her plan at this point in HTGAWM season 6. If she’s already planning on leaving without a trace, what is she doing with Robert? And how dare she make Tegan jealous if there’s nothing to come of it…?
If she is planning on leaving, at least it does look like she’s trying to set up her underlings for success. She’s been a much kinder mentor to the students in HTGAWM season 6, switching between gentle and harsh, shepherding them toward their future. She’s even weighing in on the love lives of Frank and Bonnie with care.
I’m not sure how I feel about Annalise’s final action on HTGAWM being to run away. However, like she said, sometimes you need to know when to stop fighting. She’s fought hard for six seasons, and I can’t wait to see her keep fighting for the last few episode of HTGAWM.
