The How to Get Away With Murder mid-season 5 finale ended on some huge cliffhangers.
As always, Shonda Rhimes and her team have set up some big plot points that we can’t stop thinking about. With that in mind, here are five HTGAWM season 5 questions we would kill to receive answers to:
1. Who is Gabriel’s mother?
We’ve been waiting since the How to Get Away With Murder to figure out who Gabriel Maddox was, and we finally figured it out in the mid-season finale! Well, at least we kind of did.
Because Annalise and the Keating 5 will never not be haunted by the ghost of Sam Keating, Gabriel is actually Sam’s son. The question remains, however, who is his mother? The logical assumption is that his mother is Sam’s wife from before his marriage to Annalise, but with Sam’s history of sexual scandals, that’s just as likely to not be the case.
Some theorists are still wondering if Annalise could be Gabriel’s mother, but the timeline doesn’t quite work out. The child that Annalise lost would be much younger than Gabriel, and unless Annalise is keeping really quiet about another pregnancy, we should probably spend most of our time checking out other suspects.
2. What is Gabriel up to?
Is he looking for answers? Revenge? Is he completely innocent? Who knows!
It’s possible that Gabriel never even knew about his father, growing up, but we’re betting he knows who he is now. And if he knows who Sam is, he knows that he’s dead.
Annalise and the Keating 5 may have gotten away with murder as far as the court is concerned, but Gabriel is shaping up to be a great lawyer, and if he’s curious enough, he could end up uncovering something that they’ve successfully hidden up to this point.
Alternatively, Gabriel could be out to avenge his father’s death. Of course, Wes (the murderer on record) is already dead. However, his son isn’t, and Gabriel was getting creepily close to Laurel for a while. Could he be looking to take his revenge out on Wes’ family?
The question of Gabriel’s intentions with Michaela also remains. Did he actually fall for her, or is he just using her as a means to an end? Either way, we hope Laurel warns Michaela soon before she ends up in an unsafe situation with him.
3. Who set up Nate Sr.?
Bonnie and Nate certainly believe that it was Miller, but were they correct? Based on his Miller’s shock and confusion, it’s definitely possible that he was actually just waiting for take out when he made an innocent call to the Warden on that payphone.
If he is, in fact, innocent, who set Nate Sr. up? Any of Annalise’s employers are definitely contenders, or anyone looking to stop her class action cases in their tracks.
Do we hope that Miller is guilty so that Bonnie and Nate didn’t just murder an innocent man? Yes. Do we actually think Miller’s guilty? Probably not. Therefore, everyone is a suspect!
4. Will Nate and Bonnie get away with murder?
That has seemed to be the pattern on How to Get Away With Murder, so far, but will they be able to pull it off, this time? Nate and Bonnie have been through so much already, we can’t imagine them going through that pressure and guilt again?
Annalise is a little preoccupied with the shocking news she just received, so they may be on their own in terms of destroying the evidence from their crime. That may not bode well for them, but luckily, they both have lots of practice!
5. Who is Frank talking to?
Frank has been suspicious of Gabriel since the beginning, but his investigation has always appeared to be at the request of someone else. Who is the mysterious caller on the other end of the line? What do they know, and what do they want Frank to figure out?
After a short walk on the dark side, Frank seems to be fully back on Team Annalise, so we can’t see the caller being anyone that would have malicious intent toward her. If anything, we can see him working with someone to try to protect her from whatever Gabriel’s planning.
Bonus: Is Laurel’s mom alive?
This mystery hasn’t come up in a while, but it’s a burning question we’ve had since the How to Get Away With Murder season 2 finale. After Laurel fought with her mother about possibly hurting Wes, Laurel was shown with deep scratch marks on her arms. Did she physically overpower and kill her mother?
That was the question on everyone’s mind at the beginning of How to Get Away With Murder season 3. They even straight up asked Laurel if she killed her mother. She claimed that she didn’t and that she’d actually spoken with her recently, but we’ve seen no proof of that! This case definitely isn’t closed yet, and it’s yet another mystery that we need solved in the back half of season 5.
How to Get Away With Murder season 5 will resume in 2019!
