How to Get Away with Murder has managed to keep its explosive drama and OMG moments rolling for five seasons. The show uses the same basic premise of flashing forward to a major murder and slowly working its way to the fateful moment, yet it feels fresh each time.
As always, the cast delivers stirring performances and the twists are almost impossible to pinpoint — like this season’s Gabriel Maddox mystery.
Sometimes it’s easy to miss the old days of Frank, Annalise, and Bonnie hanging out with the Keating Five (RIP Wes) in her old home as they worked together to cover up crimes and solve cases. Several people are on completely new paths, but there are some great duos that continue to make HTGAWM amazing.
Frank and Annalise
Their roller-coaster relationship has been complicated since they first met, but there’s nothing like seeing Annalise call her fave Italian ride-or-die dude to assist with a covert mission. Frank is always two steps ahead of everyone and seems to be almost omnipotent, so he’s a great person to have on her side.
I’m not always sure if Annalise can fully trust him, but he’s clutch in a tough situation so any of his past transgressions are forgiven…for now.
Annalise and Bonnie
Their friendship is filled with all sorts of shady secrets and emotional outbursts, but this season has really shown how much Annalise cares for Bonnie. Yeah, it was sketchy to hide the truth about Bonnie’s baby, but Annalise’s heart was coming from a place of love that wanted Bonnie to be happy.
And, Bonnie returns the favor by putting up with Annalise’s scathing remarks and general messiness by offering a shoulder or simply giving her space to do what she needs to do. Bonnie also still leans on Annalise for emotional support and advice during her toughest times.
It’s been nice to see them have friendly moments and smiles this season even though they are no longer official colleagues.
Connor and Oliver
Connor has been being an annoying jerk towards Annalise (not fair) and Gabriel (kinda fair) this season, but he’s still okay in my book because of his love for Oliver. He fought a homophobic jerk like a boss in the latest episode and affirmed that he would get married in a church solely because he wants Oliver to be happy.
Their wedding planning on a slim budget has been a cute plot during all this drama, even though their reception turns into the location of the big murder. And it was so sweet when Oliver told his mom that Connor has been his rock through his struggles with being HIV positive. This couple gives fans all the happy feels.
They always support each other, and now that all the secrets have been aired, keep it real at all times. This insane world isn’t the most nurturing place for romance, but they are making it work among the murders.
Annalise and Tegan
This is my favorite HTGAWM Season 5 duo. I love seeing two powerful, intelligent, flawed, and beautiful Black women work together to bust up the patriarchy and school people on touching our hair.
In a dream world, Annalise and Tegan would open their own firm and rule the world, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards yet. They make a great team, respect each other, and have a not-so-subtle undercurrent of mutual attraction to each other.
Fans ship them, so make it a thing Shondaland!
Bonnie and D.A. Miller
I was shaking my head at Bonnie when she first started her relationship with the interim D.A., but I have been proven wrong about this relationship. They work well together and encourage each other to be their best in the workplace.
She fully trusts him, which is no small feat considering her horrific history of abuse at the hands of her father, and confides in him about everything. And he is sticking by her side even after hearing about the darkness of her past.
He loves her and they seem happy, which will probably get ruined by him dying soon because no one can be happy for long on this show. Sigh. Until that happens, fans can bask in the glow of this wonderful romance.
Laurel and Frank
This pair is so much better when they are not romantically together. The world may never know what all of these men see in Laurel, but it’s interesting how she brings out a softer side of Frank.
I adore his interactions with Christopher and his genuine concern about keeping that sweet baby safe in this crazy inner circle. He usually keeps info close to his chest, but he trusts Laurel enough to let her in on the Gabriel secret.
I’m not her biggest fan, so I think its hilarious that she has to suffer in silence with this information. Hopefully, they continue to remain nosy, stalker friends and never get back together.
Laurel and Michaela
Michaela has been reeking of desperation since she slept with Marcus last season, but her camaraderie with Laurel is everything. They have helped each other cover up murders, kill it in the courtroom, score brownie points with Tegan, chatted in bed after a hangover, had a few blunt heart to hearts, and actually seem to care about each other’s well-being.
Gabriel’s recent interest in Michaela and determination to be at the wedding has Laurel’s Spidey senses tingling for good reason, but will she tell her gal pal about his true identity?
You bet she will and they will team up to piece things together after the murder.
