Class is back in session in HTGAWM season 6, episode 2. Here’s our review of the episode.
Now that the stage has been set for How to Get Away With Murder season 6, the episodic element has returned. This year, in Annalise’s ever-evolving class, the students will be taking more ownership over their cases than ever before, which makes a lot of sense since they’re only months away from graduation.
As Annalise so eloquently put it, she’s “not going to be around in three months,” to help them out. Whether that’s ominous foreshadowing or simply stating the facts, it looks like we’re going to see the Keating crew stepping out on their own in the court room in the final season of HTGAWM.
If future cases incite the sort of passion in the students that this episode’s sparked in Connor, I am so here for watching them take their place in the courtroom. It’s been so amazing to see Connor grow as a person and a lawyer since he started helping Annalise with her class action lawsuit. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the group (which now includes Asher!) fares in their trials, and to get a sense of what their lives will be like after the HTGAWM finale.
As the students grow, it’s also been interesting to see how Annalise changes around them — especially since she’s experiencing a lot of growth, herself. She clearly has more respect for them than ever before, after everything they’ve been through and how far they’ve come.
She sometimes even crosses into the role of friend and colleague with them now, instead of remaining on a pedestal in her role of teacher, mentor, and mother figure. I’m excited to see how this continues throughout HTGAWM season 6. I’m also dying to know if we can trust Annalise when she says she didn’t know about her connection to Michaela’s father, and if we can, why she did choose Michaela and Connor.
If Annalise and her therapist are to be believed, then she’ll die if she keeps stepping in for everyone like she has been, which sounds like more super ominous foreshadowing to me! It looks like she’s clearly trying to reposition herself within the team, but fails to stay the course with Vivian.
I was surprised how quickly Vivian sought Annalise out in HTGAWM season 6, episode 2. I thought we’d have to watch her lurking in the background, spying on everyone from afar, for a while. But no! She made herself known, in a big way, immediately.
That’s not the only surprise I got from Vivian, either. First of all, her relationship with Gabriel is much different than I’d imagined. They seemed to be besties during their days of constant phone calls, but it’s clear now that he was just treating her with kid gloves, tip-toeing around a problem that he’s always had to deal with.
I was also shocked by how quickly Annalise and Vivian were able to find their common ground. It was cool to see them discuss Sam because we’ve never really heard him referred to in a positive light, other than by his adoring, semi-incestuous sister, Hanna. To hear them describe his “magic” shone a new light on some of the events of HTGAWM.
Vivian might not be a problem in HTGAWM season 6 like I originally thought. It initially seemed like she’d be digging into Sam’s death, but I’m not so sure about that anymore. However, her presence has already resulted in Bonnie being fired, and I feel positive that she’ll be a liability in a way that will tie directly into the events of the flash forward.
I’m really glad that HTGAWM is using Frank to investigate Laurel’s disappearance in the final season. Even if they don’t get back together, it’s a nice ode to what they’ve been through together, and what they mean to each other. Also, if we can hear him say more things like, “I can’t not know,” I definitely won’t complain about it.
I got chills seeing Jorge Castillo again on How to Get Away With Murder. The show has done a great job of building him up to be evil incarnate, but I don’t think I realized how effective they’ve been until he was back onscreen. That being said, I don’t trust a word that comes out of his mouth, so there’s not much to discuss from his interaction with Frank — especially now that we know the safety deposit box key belonged to Wes, and Laurel has already come to collect!
Last, but not least, let’s talk about the flash forward. In HTGAWM season 6, episode 2, we got to see where Michaela is during the upcoming events, and we also learned that it happens near/during their graduation. We’ve obviously seen Michaela holding that fire poker before, so that’s not news. In fact, we’ve seen them all holding it, so I imagine they’ll be employing a similar interrogation strategy with everyone.
Here’s my thought, and your weekly edition of “Annalise isn’t really dead, right?”: What if the flash forward to Annalise’s funeral and the other murder stuff aren’t even connected?
We haven’t seen anything that makes it clear they’re the same event, at all. Annalise’s funeral could be a dream, something symbolic, a ruse, or all of the above. Just because they’re occurring in the same flash forward scene, that doesn’t mean they need to be analyzed together.
Obviously, we’ll know more as HTGAWM continues to fill in the blanks of the flash forward. Hopefully season 6, episode 3, will give us a better picture of what the heck is going on.
