How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Attending the 87th Oscars – Jimmy Bean
When I was twelve, I would have bet every Pokemon card I owned that I would never attend the Oscars. Movies were my life, and the annual celebration was enough to put me waist deep in lists, nominations, predictions, and records of previous award shows. YouTube didn’t exist back then, so I had to rely on specific Oscar clip shows to get my winner’s speech fix. Now, thanks to the amazing people that make Hypable.com what it is, I can stand on their shoulders and ask the winners at the Academy Awards questions myself instead of watching clips on recorded tapes borrowed from the library. I’m incredibly thankful and lucky to be very busy this weekend.
Binge-watching three Best Picture-nominated films – Danielle Zimmerman
For the last few years, my best friend and I have made it our goal to get through as many Oscar Best Picture nominees as we can (because it’s nice to have seen the films I’m rooting for or against). Last year, I think I saw five out of the 9. This year I’m going for 100%. Though my friend and I saw the majority of the films together, he saw a few without me (jerk). So this weekend, I plan on watching the last three movies that I haven’t seen: The Theory of Everything, Boyhood, and Selma. Whether I get them done over the course of the weekend or all on Sunday before the Oscars begin, I will see them all. This is my year.
Watching ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ – Tariq Kyle
It’s not often that an action movie has me really, really interested – not even the Bond films. But for some unknown reason the whole concept of Kingsman: The Secret Service has me enthralled, and it has ever since I saw the first trailer. Is it the fact that it’s British? Is it because there are cool gadgets? Or is it that it stars Colin Firth along side a ridiculously attractive young Brit? It’s probably all of the above, but I’ll find out for sure this weekend!
Going for a second IMAX round of ‘Interstellar’ – Mitchel Clow
I couldn’t have been any more excited when I read that Interstellar was going to have a special BOGO IMAX ticket showing this Saturday. Seeing this film in IMAX is a must. Like, bucket list must. During one key emotional and physical scene, the sound system and two-story tall screen will trick your mind into thinking that you’re lifting off with the astronauts. Even an IMAX neigh-sayer like myself will tell you to take advantage of this awesome opportunity.
Reading ‘Anna Dressed In Blood’ – Laura Byrne Cristiano
I’ve had Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed In Blood for awhile and haven’t gotten around to it until now. The reason (cue yelling, I know… I know…) I hate the cover art, and frankly it just turned me off with a trying too hard modern gothic horror feel. So, anyway, I ran out of things to read earlier this week, and, you guessed it, I got over my cover aversion, and gave in. So anyway, I’m three chapters in so far and I’m getting into this ghost hunter/killer world. I’m curious to see where the story goes. Oh, and I still hate the cover.
Watching the Oscars, duh – Selina Wilken
Cop-out answer? Sure. But seeing as a) my brother is obsessed with Neil Patrick Harris and b) it starts in the middle of the night here, preparing for this exciting television event will take a whole weekend to plan. We may go to the theater on Saturday and see if ANY Oscar-nominated movie has come out in Denmark yet, and otherwise we’ll probably be forced to sit through a marathon of How I Met Your Mother‘s musical episodes. So it’s like a win/winish situation.
Dragging everyone I’ve ever met to go watch ‘McFarland, USA’ – Ariana Quiñónez
Haven’t you heard? I’m blowing up the big screen this weekend starring alongside Kevin Costner in the Disney film, McFarland, USA. It’s my big Hollywood debut! It’s all very exciting! But in all seriousness, last year McFarland, USA filmed in my hometown, and so I got to be an extra on location; I play one of the lethargic PE students in Kevin Costner’s class. So obviously now that the movie is releasing this weekend, I will be dragging everyone I have ever come into contact with into the movie theater so that they can watch me jog in eighties-inspired basketball shorts.
Reading ‘City of Savages’ – Caitlin Kelly
On the heels of a nasty ice storm here in the Southeast, I’ve been looking for new, interesting reading material to pass days without power and heat. Goodreads recommended the recently released City of Savages, and the premise of Manhattan being turned into a giant POW camp was intriguing. About a third of the way through, I’m completely hooked on Sky and Phee’s story as they learn about the outside world, their mother, and life before the Red Allies invaded.
Reading some ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ comics – Brittany Lovely
Seven months ago I innocently agreed to watch 40 minutes worth of cartoon footage each week and discuss it with some Hypable peers on the ReWatchable podcast. BUT THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN THE FIRE NATION ATTACKED. In all seriousness, Avatar: The Last Airbender lived up to the hype and I am sad to see it go. Luckily, I hear that there are these so called comics floating out in the world that continue the story of Aang and the Gaang. Perhaps, I’ll even grow to accept that Katara and Zuko live happily ever after without each other. (That’s a lie. I will never accept that.) I’ll be picking up one or two this weekend to linger in the Avatar world a bit longer while I wait to return to ReWatchable for The Legend of Korra.
