It has been so much fun to consider all the possible romantic pairings on Legacies, but “Mombie Dearest” gave us the Hope and Rafael friendship I know I will be obsessed with for a long time to come.
“Mombie Dearest” gave us some absolutely heartbreaking Saltzman family moments, an update on exactly why Caroline is spending so much time away from the Salvatore School, and a boundary spell that may have given us an epic friendship to add to the TVD-Universe list alongside Damon/Alaric.
I am, of course, talking about Hope and Rafael. Prior to this episode, they’ve only really had combative interactions (him sabotaging the school van so he could go help find Landon, the whole dragon fight, last week’s vote in the new Honor Council), so it was really great to see her reach out to him when she needed a friend, especially since he very well might need one as well.
Penelope used a barrier spell to lock them away from the twins’ party for an hour, also forcing Hope and Raf to address the Landon elephant in the room and maybe get to a place where they can be great friends.
It makes total sense for them to go to each other. So far, they have had almost zero romantic interest in each other, which is fantastic considering the little triangle Josie, Raf, and Lizzie have weaved and Hope and Landon’s epic goodbye kiss. Raf and Lizzie’s part may or may not be withering away a bit after his admissions to her on the dance floor last night, but we’ll just have to see how that relationship progresses.
Also, Hope has had, what, 10-ish YEARS to bond with Josie and Lizzie, but is just now letting Josie see her softer side. It makes sense for Hope to reach out to a Salvatore School newbie for friendship because he doesn’t have 10 years of her ignoring him to overcome. Now that they’ve addressed why she voted against Landon staying, and he’s spoken his peace, they have all kinds framework to build a solid, honest friendship.
Also, the wolf factor. I am counting down to the next Legacies full moon because I want her to help him learn to accept the transition and actually get to enjoy his wolf time every month. Hope has already shown that she uses her wolf form as a bit of stress relief when she just needs to run free for a bit, and it would be amazing to see Hope and Rafael bonding over their werewolf sides.
The end of the episode set the stage for this friendship more perfectly than I could have ever hoped, and I look forward to many, many years of watching these two hold each other up no matter what romantic entanglements come and go. Friendship is the bedrock of the TVD-Universe, and Hope and Rafael’s could be one for the record books.
